In the interest of you having a fun appropriated holiday / getting sauced to honor a Catholic Saint while bowing down to the corporate hegemony of alcohol manufacturers, here are some Saint Patrick's Day parties and deals.
Starting Early, With Drink Specials
Scoreboard, where the year 1997 burns eternally. They're throwing down from Friday–Tuesday, with 25rmb green beer and 30rmb Irish car bombs all night. Expect a younger crowd here, mixed in with a couple old China hands past the point of no return. That's all day, every day until Tuesday.
2/F, 1028 Huaihai Zhong Lu,near Donghu Lu
Contemporary yuppie vibes and all-day happy hour on Broken Bagpipe Lager from Saturday–Tuesday. Anyone who shows up rocking Leprechaun gear will get the first beer of their choice for free too. Same deal applies at their sister venue Boxing Cat Brewery, but with "Lucky Leprechaun Lager" instead.
This local Irish pub on Xingfu Lu, across the street from the original Logo, has live music most days. On Saint Patrick's Day, they'll open at 2pm, extend the happy hour until 8pm, and some live music at 8pm. For the whisky heads, they also do a malt of the month there for 60rmb a glass.
For an Irish Menu with Irish beef stew and soda bread, or corned beef and swiss on rye, Southern Belle has got you. Just tried the corned beef and swiss for lunch -- pretty decent. They've got that menu through Tuesday, plus 50rmb cans of Guinness, 50rmb Irish coffee, and 30rmb Jameson. Live music on Saturday evening too. More details.
If you're looking for a corporate-branded daytime getdown, Jameson's got you. They're doing a sesh at Undefined gallery in M50, with live hip-hop from Busy Gang, experimental rock from Duck Fight Goose, DJ sets by China DMC champs DJ Cavia & DJ Monk, and sets by Yeti DJs as well. Then there's Baoism and Gum Gum serving high-end baozi and whiskey infused ice cream, cocktails from Jameson, pop-ups from Helas and Bliss Out, and live graffiti and a photo exhibit from Studio 191. Now THAT'S youth culture worth investing in! Goes from 1-6pm on Saturday, March 14.
For those in Changning District, that sports bar Limbo has happy hour on Guinness all night on Tuesday, plus live jams from local band Studio 188. Probably not Celtic music though -- expect some classic rock, funk, and soul covers.
Another old Shanghai hand, Sasha's is hosting Shanghai's Gaelic football team and members of the Irish community for some daytime drinking and socializing. Live band D'Bize straight from Ireland are dropping some traditional Irish music as well. They've got a fiddle player. Seems legit. Goes from 4pm–late on Saturday, March 14.
Just Irish Pubs
Hey if you live out in Pudong near Thumb Plaza, check out this incredible deal The Irishman's Pub is offering on Saint Patrick's Day…
Wait for it.
BUY SIX GUINNESS GET A FREE T-SHIRT.
[free for them -- extra free for you]
They said "maybe" they will have a special price on Guinness too. Looking like 60rmb a pint. That's an extra special price of about 10 USD.
near Xinjinqiao Lu
For the Jinqiao community… I just spoke with the boss of this place. Real nice guy. He said they don't allow Guinness in the door. It's a Cork pub so they pour Murphy's Irish Stout. They're doing a set menu for 280rmb per person all week. That includes soup, smoked salmon, stew or halibut, Baileys panna cotta, and a pint of Murpheys. Also, happy hour from 5-7pm is 15% off the bar tab.
Hey maybe they're doing something. Don't know. Just gave them a call and the woman who answered the phone didn't know what's up. Seems like a crucial detail to tell your staff, being an Irish bar and all. But yeah, Blarney Stone. They're Irish. They're on Yongkang.
Promo crew French Tuesdays are doing a party with canapés, a lucky draw, and champagne in the Nimbus Lounge at Vespertine. Well, leave it to the French to fuck up Saint Patrick's Day -- this is the only Saint Patrick's Day party with a dress code: "Chic and elegant with a touch of green (no jeans, sneakers, tee shirts)." But they are doing complimentary face art. Have fun with that.
Streets Of Rage / Party Bus
For straight-up laowai thunder, Pub Crawl Shanghai is cruising around town, getting crunk to the 9th dimension, dumping shots in your filthy mouth, and hitting up three bars and a club. This might be a good way to go if you're new in town and looking to meet people. Departs from Bar Gatsby at 9pm. Price is 250rmb at the door or 200rmb if you book a seat on pubcrawlshanghai.com
Ok this isn't a Saint Patrick's Day party per se, but Shanghai Brewery on Hengshan is doing an anniversary party with the subtitle "We're Not Closing". And because nothing will reassure people of your business's health more than giving away free product, they're giving away two free kegs on Monday night. One keg of White IPA and another of People's Pilsner. They're about to open up shop on Donghu Lu. Could that trigger a price war between them and Liquid Laundry? Sure hope so. Anyway, free beer from 7pm.
There you go. Murder some pints of the black stuff and listen to some chopped-and-screwed Van Morrison. I'll be posted up at Judy's with a bottle of Alizé.
