August might feel slow, but there's still plenty of chances in the night. Chances to roam these streeeeets, to dance, to wake up in between your cat and the bottle of water you grabbed on the way out of your Didi Zhuanche, feeling good, feeling alive.
We know it's hard to keep up with all the parties and bookings going on every week in Shanghai. That's one reason we made it our mission is to help you and us know what's goin' on, all in one central place, every month, and to spread the word about good events. With that, here's some club news, our monthly shortlist of parties, and an intro to the current club landscape.
That said, a lot of good events don't get announced until a week or so out. As always, check out our events listings to see what's on. Some of the best nights are the ones with local and domestic acts and resident DJs.
Club News for August
The new Club Lawson outside of INS last Saturday
Not tooo many club developments this month but here's one: some kind of Lawson club has opened at INS. Last Saturday, someone in a banana costume was DJing, lazer lights were flashing, and Asahi tall boys were standing tall and frigid in the freezer. Spectacle: Shanghai loves her.
Candyshop is open, bringing hip hop vibes to the IAPM hood
Candyshop, from some of the people behind Ninja and others, is officially open, with food, shisha, DJs every night, a VIP room, and some parties. Music is hip hop, afro, latin, and house. Yolo.
Le Baron is doing open bar for 98rmb every Thursday night this month. Tequila.
And... we've heard some news that a new listening bar called Anthem could be opening soon, from the people behind Nora's.
In case you missed it, the big news on the horizon is still that INS is opening a new complex called "INS Sea" at the Tomorrowland Festival site in October (Tomorrowland returns on Nov 22-23). That's near the Huangpu River, by the Lupu Bridge. We hear that this "INS 2" will have indoor and outdoor space, and that the current INS will remain the same. Nothing serious.

Here's a quick list of some bigger and more unique events this month. This is not everything.
The clubs below are generally open every weekend and some have events during the week too (for example, Wigwam and INS are open daily). There's lots more great nights and bookings on around town, so be sure to check our event listings, and our list of nightclubs.
Bass/Club Music/Techno/Trance
Aug 7 @ Abyss, Venezuelan producer and DJ par excellence Safety Trance aka Cardopusher, blends reggaeton, dembow, industrial, techno, and rave into some fierce, high-pressure, and darkly sexy dance music.
Aug 7 @ Potent, the Tx Huaihai club has Paul Wolsch, a Costa Rican DJ, producer, and vinyl collector whose eclectic sets blend house, techno, and acid into deep, genre-spanning journeys. Plus, support from two of the region's finest: Huan Huan and Mariio.
August 8 @ Illum, the underground club has a really strong lineup of local DJs playing ballroom, bass, club music, techno, and "b!tch tracks".

August 14 @ Illum, underground promoter KNOT returns to this C-Park club for a night of gabber, hardcore, and more with Parisian artist Paul Seul, the co-founder of the now-defunct, notoriously infamous pioneering hardcore party collective Casual Gabberz.
August 14 @ Reactor, Brazilian born DJ/producer Slim Soledad channels São Paulo's underground into high-speed sets that blur Techno, Baile Funk, Trance, Hard Bass, and Gabber.

August 15 @ Abyss, promoter Turbo brings in OG dark techno producer and labelhead Perc, who's brought his uncompromising, industrial-leaning sets to everywhere from Berghain and Fabric to Tresor, and now, Abyss. Big night.
August 21 @ Abyss, the Berlin-based DJ, producer, and label founder Tommy Four Seven is known for stripped-back, high-pressure sets that blur the lines between techno, industrial, and experimental club music. Another big one.
August 22 @ Illum, promoter/label Love Bang brings a megamix of bass, hip hop, and club music to the bangin' soundsystem down here.
August 22 @ Reactor, UK-via-Nanjing producer/DJ/engineer/scholar Dirty K stops by C-Park on his 10-city China tour. His recent albums on the label Eastern Margins continue the exploration and preservation of local underground club dance music in East Asia in a very hype way.

August 29 @ Dirty House, Vancouver bass/trap artist and RL Grime collaborater Juelz brings the festival drops to the fourth floor of INS.
August 29 @ Exit, China's longest-running techno night, VOID, celebrates NINETEEN YEARS in the game at this basement club in Changning.

August 21 @ C's, Shanghainese dancehall/reggae MC Jado hosts his monthly night, with special guest BMZ, comin straight outta Xishuangbanna in Yunnan, China. Support from Jado and Wukongoo. Pull up!

Aug 21 @ Specters, The Devil's Dancers returns to this punk rock dive bar in C-Park for coldwave, darkwave, post-punk, and more.
Aug 29 @ Dirty House, Prince's former keyboard technician and Martin Gore (Depeche Mode) collaborator Bryan Black has a dark techno/industrial project called Black Asteroid that he's bringing to INS later this month.

Experimental/Mixed-Genre/Off-Venue/Just Some Parties You Should Know About
August 9 @ 哇咔溜冰场 (a roller rink deep in Qingpu), community radio station byyb and the young label 大地360 are teaming up for this livestream/roller skating party with five DJs from China and Vietnam dropping new new club music from around Asia and a bit of pop. Looking like a great Sunday sidequest.

August 14-20 @ China Shipping Pavillion, System and Xiaohongshu are teaming up for a weeklong party down by the Huangpu River. It's a school-themed temporary space called "Wonder Night Academy", with 16 spaces, including a roller rink, arcade, disco, KTV, laundry room, bathhouse, and more across three floors, with three dancefloors. Strictly pre-sale tickets for this, which need to be purchased days in advance.

Hip hop/Beats/R&B/Funk/Soul
August 7 @ Illum, hyperpop artist SEBii, who has worked with Frost Children and Billionhappy and even got a repost from Playboi Carti, brings his sugary, melodic, and turnt up meme sounds to the C-Park club.
August 7 @ Drinkery (Ruijin Lu), Sugar House, the promoter known for R&B, hip hop, edits, and community vibes, is back at this neigborhood bar on with an open decks session.
August 15 @ Wigwam, the C-Park venue is hosting the China-debut of London guitarist and producer Mansur Brown, who sits somewhere between jazz, hip-hop, ambient, and electronic music, pulling from everything from 00's Timbaland to Deftones and Dilla. Lineup also features Kin J and a new project from Shanghai-based producers Knopha and Linfeng.
August 21 @ Nike 6453, record shop/label fRUITYSHOP teams up with Nike for an AF1 hip hop block party at the Nike 6453 event space next to Spoke, on the street next to the park, right by where the first Dada used to be. Black Forces - best shoe ever?

August 28 @ Illum, up-and-coming young promoters How To Build have a night of emo Rap and live hip hop with HK rapper 柒羊 Takeem and a stacked lineup that includes Shanghai Community Radio founder Sierra Lima, who's now based in Vancouver.
August 28 @ Hush, former Shanghai resident Scarry Potter is back in town. He's the co-founder of HCMC club and label Piu Piu, and he's bringing his mix of hip hop and pan-Asian club music to this packed INS venue on the last Friday of the month.
August 28 @ C's, the Cypher Park hip hop party/jam returns for freestyles with a bunch of DJs and MC's throwing down in multiple languages.
Aug 28-29 @ North Bund Shanghai Port International Cruise Terminal, there's a free market by Jordan and The One from 4-10pm both days, with dance battles, fRUITYGROOVE DJs, records for sale, and exclusive merch drops.

House & Disco
House of Zup, the daytime party at Zup Pizza Bar is happening every Sunday in August. It's always a chill daytime affair with DJs playing house, disco, hip hop, and more from 3-9pm.
Roam has house/tech house and techno every Wednesday-Saturday night.
August 8 @ Reactor, it's a big double headliner night at the C-Park club, with house producers Jacques Greene and DJ JM, plus a solid lineup of local support from Kin J, Siesta, Sai G, Ikke, and Guz.
Aug 22 @ Heim, one of China's best house and ambient producers, Knopha, is curating a new night at this community-oriented club. Should be a good night of headier, more textured house, techno, and ambient.
August 22 @ Wigwam, former Shanghai resident Venus Flytrap plays the Final Illusion night, bringing some ambient, downtempo, techno, and house to this chill lounge-unlike-any-other.
August 29 @ Heim, Texas-based producer and DJ Gi Gi plays dreamy music drifts between ambient, dub, psychedelia, and slow-burning club rhythms.

The Current State of Clubbing
Shanghai's nightlife is heavily concentrated in two malls right now: the chaotic commercial clubbing zone known as INS near Xintiandi, and the underground-focused C-Park just a bit south of Zhongshan Park. That said, outside of these two we've still got a decent amount of clubs scattered around the neighborhoods, bigger touring acts are playing at livehouses more and more, and some promoters are throwing cool parties in off-venues like warehouses, museums, e-sports arenas, and other locations.
C-Park, aka "Underground Music Park"
People have been calling this place "the Underground INS". Located near the Yan'an Xi Lu metro station out west in Changning District, the basement of the C-Park mall is like a ma la tang of clubs, bars, livehouses, food stalls, and more, and it really encapsulates a good portion of what's happening right now in Shanghai with underground music, culture, and fashion. The place is crowded every weekend with young, mostly-local ravers, rockers, punks, cybergoth fashion kids, skaters, chillers, and party people. It's a super cool yet friendly and approachable vibe, and still somewhat low-key. There is no cover to get into C-Park.
Illum, Shanghai's new home for Chinese underground sounds and fashion
The mall itself was designed by Gensler, the same firm that did the Shanghai Tower and JFK Airport. Beijing-born chill club Wigwam opened here in 2024, but the whole basement zone really took off at the beginning of 2026 with Yuyintang, Specters, Illum, Reactor, Sympathy Angel, and more all opening within a couple months. Mall-ism aside, the place is fun, and I've been here most weekends in 2026 while trying to resist its magnetism and support venues elsewhere as much as possible too.
INS, aka "Into Nothing Serious"
Shanghai's main commercial clubbing district is a young, messy, crunk, and insane place in Fuxing Park called INS, aka Demon Town. It's a six-floor mall set up like an amusement park, with different entry passes and dozens of venues and attractions inside, like hip hop/pop club La Fin, trap/rage/hip hop club Hush, house/techno small club Dirty House, and K-Pop boys fantasyland Culture Club. Everyone should experience INS at least once, and it's one of the best places in Shanghai for people watching (posting up with a tall boy on the bench is a strong move, and free). You do have to pay a cover charge to enter the building.
If you leave INS at 5am, watch out for Mario! He'll get ya!
The place is packed on weekends, and the crowd leans local but there's a heavy international contingent as well. It's a younger crowd that prioritizes fun over music – lots of people wandering in and out of clubs, trying to find their friends or colleagues, hollering in the elevator, etc. The place stays busy even on weeknights. One friend called the INS venues "chessboard clubs" because of how difficult it can be to traverse their dancefloors. History is looping: Fuxing Park was also a major commercial clubbing destination 20 years ago, with era-defining clubs like Muse Park 97, Richy, Cashbox Partyworld KTV, and Guandii.
Night Places in other Neighborhoods
Shanghai's home for harder, faster techno and more, Abyss
In Tx Huaihai, you've got Shanghai's house of hard techno, Abyss, and popular-with-boys two room club Potent, which has pop in the main room and techno/house/electro bookings and a bangin soundsystem in their second room. Heim - which is back at the corner of Shaanxi Nan Lu and Changle Lu, in Green Station - is a diverse, community-oriented club where bouncier, more-textured and melodic house and techno (not hard techno) form the club's core sound. Not far from there is Roam, a small club playing house and techno until late. Exit in Changning is a basement club that has some good bookings and sometimes some darker dance music. Down the road from that is C's, an eternal dive bar born in the year 2000 that many of the city's DJs started out at; programming is diverse, the cookies are delicious.
La Social
On the general pop and international side of the spectrum, you've got La Barra, REVO,and Le Soir in Jing'an, and the second iteration of Parisian club Le Baron upstairs at The English Corner in Xuhui. For Latin music, you've got bar/club La Social and restaurant La Diosa, which are a quick walk from each other. For big room EDM, MAX is a big sensory-overload kinda commercial EDM club on Huaihai Lu. And down on The Bund, once a major nightlife destination, there's a commercial club called KEV where Bar Rouge used to be and also the rooftop lounge club Sky Dome.
