This traditional opera brings the classic story of Lin Daiyu and Jia Baoyu to life through intimate and immersive staging. The production blends traditional Yue opera techniques with rich emotional storytelling, offering audiences a chance to experience one of China’s most celebrated literary and theatrical works. Even without English subtitles, the performance provides a powerful cultural experience.
This immersive Yue opera adaptation of A Dream of Red Mansions tells the story of the frail and lonely Lin Daiyu, who moves into her grandmother’s household, the Jia family, and immediately bonds with her cousin, Jia Baoyu. In the Grand View Garden, the two share a love of literature and personal freedom, secretly reading The Romance of the Western Chamber and nurturing their affection.

Conflict arises as Baoyu’s father pushes for him to conform to societal expectations, while Baoyu himself resists fame and tradition, seeing Daiyu as a true confidante. Through a series of misunderstandings and tragic events—including the feigned marriage plot by Jia family elders and Daiyu’s eventual death—the story explores themes of love, social constraint, rebellion, and loss.

The immersive staging allows audiences to engage closely with the action, bringing the emotional and visual depth of Yue opera to life. The production highlights the artistry of vocal techniques, stylized movement, and symbolic performance inherent to this traditional Chinese art form.
