This performance explores reconstructed music from ancient China through historically informed performance. Using restored instruments and decoded scores, the concert presents how Tang-era music may have sounded. The show combines research, live performance, and multimedia staging to recreate a historical soundscape.

Music Along the Silk Road: Echoes of the Tang Dynasty is a concert project focused on reconstructing the sound of ancient Chinese music, particularly from the Tang Dynasty. Drawing on decades of academic research, the production explores how historical music can be interpreted and presented in a contemporary performance setting.

The concert addresses the long-standing challenge of understanding ancient Chinese music, often described as a “silent history” due to the loss of instruments, notation, and performance traditions. By incorporating findings from Dunhuang manuscripts, reconstructed instruments preserved in Japan’s Shōsōin Repository, and visual references from grotto murals, the production attempts to rebuild a historically grounded musical experience.

Rather than using modern compositional techniques, the performance follows the melodic structures and rhythmic patterns found in surviving ancient scores. The result is a staged interpretation that prioritizes historical reference and reconstruction.

Multimedia elements are used to support the performance, including visual recreations of statues and murals. These elements contribute to an immersive environment designed to reflect the musical and visual culture of the Tang period.

The production is structured around three key components:
Together, these elements form a layered presentation that connects research, performance, and visual context.
