Sandwiched in between a lottery ticket shop and a cell phone store on Changle Lu is a tiny internet radio station that's been hosting streams for 102 consecutive weeks, as of yesterday. The room holds maybe 10 people, some DJ and livestream gear, and a well-curated beer fridge. Anyone is welcome to stop in and hang out, and on any given weekend, that might be friends of the DJ or a curious grandma who pops in to see what's going on and ends up showing off some of her dance moves.

Bringing Shanghai's music out of the clubs and into the streets – and forming bridges to the rest of the world – is kind of the whole idea behind byyb (the abbreviation of "表演一波", "just perform"). Per their website: "We believe good music should not be kept underground. By staying at the roadside since day one, we've encountered all kinds of people – different fields of work, different working classes – who stop by to listen for a while, or simply start to think: what is even this? What am I hearing?"

byyb is the project of Shanghai's yb and Guangzhou's leejiner, and is part of a long lineage of Shanghai online radio stations that includes uDance, SHCR, and Baihui. Together, they stream, record, and archive music sets, host workshops, interview guests on the street, and solve technical difficulties to make all this happen. Sometimes they stream from venues like Yu Garden (this one) featuring Shanghai's Sanya, which has around 264k views on YouTube, the banks of the Huangpu River, and restaurant kitchens.

Since 2023, they've already worked with 700 DJs, musicians, and artists worldwide, and much of this is archived on their website. Cities and music are two of the greatest things in the world, and byyb blends them together beautifully.

Saturday & Sunday's byyb Events

This weekend is another marathon weekend for byyb. First, on Saturday at their new workshop space all day long, they've got a collaboration with Carhartt WIP featuring a stacked lineup of sets by people moving underground culture in Shanghai: DJs, promoters, producers, club founders, and more. This is part of Carhartt's Audio Archives program that includes 17 radio stations around the world, including Rinse France, Radio Alhara in Palestine, Visla FM in Seoul, and more.

Then, on Sunday, at neighborhood record shop, fRUITYSHOP on Changle Lu, they're streaming sets all afternoon of disco house and more from Shanghai DJs like Finascia, Spada, Big Mack, and others.

Both events are free and open to the public, and will also be livestreamed on byyb's WeChat channel (search for byyb.radio) and their website (https://www.byyb.live), on which you could spend days exploring and listening to sets and discovering new DJs.
