We 2 people arrived at around 22:30, then we ordered 2 steaks, they were quite nice but the sizes maybe too small for 2 extremely hungry people,so was hoping there could be bottomless salad with french fries as i read online but only to be told that there are only bottomless fries instead of both, its confusing coz saw there were comments written online said there are bottomless salad ......anyway,not a big deal. Then later the waitress came to me and said they were nearly closed so wondered if we will order something more, thought she meant except what we have ordered now do we need to continue order other stuff, so i said no, then we expected we can get bottomless fries so we asked more, they were concluded in what we already ordered so there should be no problem, but turned out the kitchen was closed so there were no food now, the waitress told me she asked me before so it was "my fault", i had no idea, thought she asked me if i wanna order another steak ,but maybe she should made her question more clear.
so ended up with being still hungry without solution.
But we got 2 more drinks instead since they were't willing to lower the price just because we only got a few fries. And the waitress seemd impatient . We ordered manhatten, strong one,but way too strong, another one is old fashioned, took ages to come, added too much bitter, tasted horrible. we tried to explain it to the bartender but his english is not so good, so hard to communicate so finally we just took it ...actually there were only one waitress spoke good english, the rest should really improve their English. If with better English, i believe there would be fewer misunderstandings.
So last night we spent more than 600 rmb but ended up being still hungry and with some horrible take away alcohol. Decided never come back again.

Just came over from Sydney and already we were craving a good slab of meat! However we didnt want to empty our pockets at the same time. Found The Cut online, and decided to give it a try. What can i say? Good service, nice ambience, and best of all...steak. Steaks come at four different cuts with four different price levels - we chose the middle two and were not disappointed. You'd be surprised at how many restaurants can get "medium rare" wrong - not this one. Medium rare was medium rare - pink in the middle, nice and juicy! Not to mention bottomless french fries and salad (about 6 different varieties) and soup (nothing to shout about with the soup). Hoegaarden to wash it all down. Popped next door for a movie after ...overall a great date night!

Went there on a Tuesday evening. Restaurant half full, a little loud on the background music. Friendly and accomodating male waiter with surprisingly good english. We wanted to check out the place for an affordable steak and decided on The Cut's Canadian Angus ribeye with free salad bar and all-you-can-eat fries. The salad bar is really nice, fresh, diverse and appealing with maybe 15 bowls for mixing. Freshly filled bowls coming in, no bowl left empty. Very good. If on a diet or being a veg you can choose the salad on its own at RMB 95. Now the bad part: The Cut steak. RMB 218 gets you 180 gr of so-called rib eye of Canadian origin, or so they say. I doubt this 1 cm thin slab of beef has ever been on an international trip. Most likely it is local produce from a milking cow, never aged properly. Though cooked as ordered (medium and juicy) it was chewy and definitely needed the steak knife to cut 2x1 cm edible cubes. Recommendation: forget this dish and go for the bigger cuts. For two people maybe share a 280 gr Wagyu and order an extra salad.

I’m originally from Bordeaux in France and use to be for many, many years a regular of L’Entrecote and still a huge fan who systematically pushing the door as soon as I’m back home. So when I read your RADAR article about THE CUT, you can guess I got very excited about give it a try ASAP.
Finally I got the opportunity to visit the restaurant last week with a group of 5 other pals, and I have to admit that the concept is a bit different than what I had in mind, influenced by my personal knowledge from the original concept. Now beside that, we had a great time.
First of all, the ambiance. Great feeling. I’m not a big fan of dinner in shopping mall, but their location is premium with a nice layout and an exceptional view on Jing Nan. The hostess nicely proposed us to visit their second floor and that was a surprise!! It is not open yet but great space with beautiful terrace. The design is really cool with a nice urban/rock touch (not sure if it means something to you) and good music.
Service was good and friendly, nicely done by a waitress called Shadow. Well done lady!!
Then the food. I ordered myself their signature dish called THE CUT. A Canadian prime with its secret sauce. I loved it. It was not the same as at home but the quality of the meat and especially the secret sauce was great. After a discussion with their director I understood a bit better the overall concept and the direction they took which in my opinion is now far from the original French restaurant.
Everyone else enjoyed their dish, but I let them write their own review if they want to be heard!
A great salad bar with fresh ingredients, a good looking dessert trolley which I didn’t try because to full after main dish.
My only complain will go for the fries, too oily and not good enough in my opinion. After discussion again with the same director, he said that it is very difficult to have good home made fries in China because of the quality of the potato in MAINLAND. Well, that a shame for a steak and fries restaurant!! But they apparently working hard on this one.
Overall, a great time and very good value for money. We paid around 400rmb per person including drinks which for a steak house in Shanghai is really not that expensive.

I usually don't write review on restaurants but it's the second time I am having dinner at The Cut and I had great experiences the both times so I decided to give them a thumbs up!
Location is perfect and right next to the movies!
Loved the design, very warm and modern french touch. If the weather allows it you should eat outside on the big terrace.
I only had the "The Cut" steak the two times but the size is very decent for the prize and really appreciated the all you can eat french fries (real french thin fries). The salad bar was a surprise, very innovative and tasty recipes. I know it should be all about the steaks but the desserts were really amazing.
Overall a really good experience, I am so glad I finally found a place to eat a good and reasonably priced steak in Shanghai!

Few days ago, we heard about "The Cut" has been open in AIPM. we love "steak&fries", so asked friends to try with us.
i think they can make it better.
first, not all staff speak very good english. but the service is nice.
second, the music is too loud, make it like a bar, not a restaurant.
Third, Salad bar was good, not took much choice, but enough.
we only very disappointed with their Steak, dry, no taste. we eat better at home.
hope they improve asap.

Well what can I say. I went here yesterday (Sunday) as the Radar review made it sound excellent.
We arrived at 12, there was one person at the entrance waiting to seat people and a Chinese American Dude that took about 10 minutes to make a reservation (call it in next time dude). Once he was finished the staff at the entrance seated the people who were waiting in front of us and came back after what felt like 10 minutes (the place ain't that big). We were told the only tables available were next to a leaky air con (just opened? Spend some of the money you've made at Bar Rouge on quality workmanship guys!) However the seats weren't that bad so kudos to the lady that seated us.
I ordered the steak on a board with two sauces and my wife the steak on a plate. The service was so so, nothing much to complain about, however the waiter really failed to explain what options were available and couldn't seem to grasp what medium well meant in either English and Chinese (don't jump on me saying perhaps I said it wrong people, my wife is Chinese, nothing wrong with her pronunciation)
So we go to the unlimited salad bar which was actually very good, lots of choices, then come back to the table to see two groups that were seated and ordered after us already had their drinks. I decided not to say anything and waited to see how long it would take for our drinks to come, 10 minutes later they arrive.
20 minutes later and the two groups are served their steaks and fries (again they were seated and ordered after us), an further 10 minutes later and our food arrives. I was completely underwhelmed. My steak was grey and lukewarm, completely unseasoned and the fries were dry and basically rock hard (you're supposed to be able to have unlimited fries, but I couldn't finish the first portion, very clever guys, put people off by serving them crap) My wife's steak, which was rmb100 cheaper than mine was cooked well and had flavour, her fries were of course the same as mine
As usual in these types of places there was a snooty westerner who I assumed was the manager, who not once asked people how the food was. The waiter gave us a few mustard's and different salts (without explaining what was what) which again I only understood because I read the smartshanghai review.
If you're charging people RMB400 plus for two plates of food then at least pretend you care about the customers dining experience.experience.
I read something online recently about restaurants pet peeves about Shanghai diners, one of them was "tell us about issues rather than writing a bad review).
Well boo hoo, how about listening to your customers and having a level of food and service that matches the price, I've no issue paying for quality.
I've actually given up complaining in restaurants here, read any review and when someone raises a issue they're left arguing with a junior member of staff who gives an answer without checking or spend extra time in a place they've had a bad experience and perhaps get 10% off, it's not about getting a discount or a freebie, it's about getting a decent meal, so we paid and left, vowing never to return again, another disappointing, overpriced dining experience in the city I've come to call home.
