I'm wondering why this place wasn't incredibly crowded on a Saturday afternoon. It seems like the perfect place to go out for brunch - dishes come out very fast, drinks are good, nothing is overly expensive and there's a lot to choose from. There's also an outdoor seating area but considering that Shanghai is slowly roasting itself alive these days, nobody dared to sit outside.

The chicken avocado press sandwich was really good, as well as the avocado and egg toast. Portions were not too big, but tasty (unless you order the roasted chicken sets. Those looked massive). Sweet tooths and people longing for a diabetes diagnose will rejoice, their cake selection is pretty damn good and there's classics like Red Velvet cake, Lemon Pie, and cookie-dough cheesecake, which I didn't know was a thing but yeah, that was really good too.

Atmosphere is pretty chill and service is quite friendly; there's no bathroom inside so you have to go to the office building next door.
A solid spot for breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner.

In the age-old debate of which came first, the chicken or the egg, the answer is a moot point when deciding whether or not to give Chicken & Egg a try. Do it!

Why this place isn't more popular is beyond me. Every time I go there are only a few patrons. A solid spot for breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner. Seriously, I could eat here for all three meals in the same day.

Firstly, the value for the money is spot on, not a cheap meal, but extremely reasonable pricing in this dubious city of overhyped rip-offs.

69rmb for a white or dark chicken meal (including 2 sides and choice of 3 sauces). Compared to Brasa chicken or Liquid Laundry, the price-point is on-point.

The Chicken Caesar Salad is so good and filling, and they absolutely don't skimp on the chicken portion and throw a perfectly poached egg on top. It's well-balanced and not over-dressed, and consistently executed. They also do a mini Cobb salad which is a great light lunch (35rmb).

Lastly, for 19rmb you can add some cold sides which are healthy, filling, and perfectly shareable. They does roast cauliflower, spinach orzo, and an spicy Asian slaw which are all tasty options to accompany whichever main you choose.

    Overall summary:

Solid spot for any meal, which a portion/quality/price index that is well worth a visit. Service is friendly and efficient. Bottom-line: delicious food that is both healthy and filling. I walk away full and happy every time! *applause*

Relatively good food for a really reasonable price. It's possible to get by with a relatively healthy meal as well (I mean, it's still eating out so..). Suggestions are their pumpkin dishes, the sandwich and particularly the hash. Good deal with the chicken and sides for under 100 RMB. All sorts of nice sauces to try.

Happy hour is pretty much the same terrific deal as Citron, buy-one-get-one. Only longer and on weekends, which is really nice. The drinks aren't the greatest you've ever had, but they definitely aren't anything to complain about. No one should really complain about 2 mojitos for 55 in this city though. The menu also says pitchers are included so..

The decor is also similar to Citron, which is fine, the patio is about to be the bigger draw anyways. I'd rather get the good deals in a convenient ground floor location like this expensive meals anyways. Maybe not somewhere you go to impress someone, but perfect for a casual meal.

The service was fine, so maybe they weren't as busy, or they've tried to improve since the other reviews.

    Overall, well-impressed.

Weekday lunch, sitting on the patio. After we ordered, the waiter informs us that they are very busy so the food will take awhile. That's something you should tell people before they order so they can decide if they want to wait or not.

The food was fine but nothing spectacular. Their lunch set was a good value but for the long wait, it wasn't worth it. The waiter was polite but there needs to be more staff. He seemed to be running from table to table constantly.

    Pros:

    - Great Patio/outdoor space

    - Food was fantastic. (BBQ pulled chicken sandwich, egg cocotte, mashed potatoes, coleslaw)

    - Manager comped a dish because it was supremely late. (Rarely happens in my experience)

    Cons:

    - Understaffed for a busy Sunday (manager and 2 waitstaff) f

    - 40 minutes passed and our food didn't arrive while every table that arrived after received theirs. Can you please check on our food? "Sorry, it's sunny out and we are really busy" I'll admit this was a creative and mildly entertaining excuse, but when you are hangry it is not what you want to hear.

    Bottom line:
Food was amazing, but hopefully they can get more people on staff to handle the weekend brunch crowd. I will definitely be returning and you should check this place out.

Chicken & Egg is a small diner-type place just south of Jingan Temple. I figured I was there for the chicken, so I got the thigh meat set for one with green beans and chicken fat roast potatoes. Everything came out so fast, I knew that the chicken and sides must have been in steam trays or under a heat lamp in the back (not made to order). Surprisingly, that didn’t detract from the flavor at all. The chicken was unbelievably juicy, and the green beans had a great roasted-garlic flavor to them.

The chicken set and a beer came out to about 100RMB, which felt cheap for the quantity.

The place itself feels like a New Jersey diner: place mat menus, white tile walls, and a glass pastry display up front. The food and value are great, but it's not necessarily a place to take someone you want to impress.
