The Spot is a popular sports bar / restaurant catering to a diverse group of expats looking for food, drinks, bar games, and international sports on the TV. In terms of décor, it's slightly nicer and more spacious than other options for sports bars in Shanghai, and caters well to larger groups. With an emphasis on gastro fair, the dining options at The Spot meander between European and South East Asian cuisines, with the standouts being the German and Thai options. Watch for their weekly drinks specials and their weekend all-you-can-eat, all-you-can-drink BBQs (150rmb per person). Other noteworthy aspects: pretty nice patio seating and a Sunday poker night.

Our group of four went to the spot for dinner last sunday. We had eaten there before and found the food to be fairly standard and good value for money. On arrival we were pleasantly surprised to hear about the 150rmb all you can eat/drink deal. Looking at the list of food available on the all you can eat menu we surmised that a lot of the regular menu was on there so it could be a good choice.
The food that actually came out was much smaller servings than the regular dishes and were very poorly prepared. The common concensus was that the food was very oily, and in fact after eating our meals, all of us felt sick.
If this was not bad enough, the service was absolutely terrible. The only good thing about the service was one waitress who was genuinely nice, even though she was new did not really understand the guidelines of the all you can eat menu. As a result she said that diet coke was indeed included in the all you can drink menu, however when I tried to order a second one I was told only regular coke was included as diet coke was more expensive as they did not have it on tap. In fact the all you can drink choices are very restrictive. Eventually after much complaining I received a second diet coke, however the third one that came out was almost definitely a regular on-tap coke, although they promised when I asked that it was a diet coke.
In addition, the floor manager was incredibly surly and he did not acknoweledge any of our requests other than to grunt at us.
Overall it was poor service and poor food from an establishment that has been around long enough that they should be providing much better. Perhaps the a la cart menu is better, but we felt completely ripped-off by the all you can eat menu, which seemed to be little more than a blatant money-making exercise.
