[2016]: The F&B Memorial Reel

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. A look at some of Shanghai's biggest F&B casualties in 2016. Gone but not forgotten, to the great movable feast in the sky.

  • Xixi -- a brief run but they made some waves. They're planning to reopen in Xintiandi after the CNY.

  • The American outpost on Changle, Southern Belle ended their lengthy run after a dispute with the landlord.

  • Soprano -- formerly a casual little trattoria and pizzeria in Jing'an.

  • The short lived but popular Pirata, felled by neighbor complaints.

  • A real iconic Shanghai venue, the Paulaner Brauhaus on Fenyang Lu closed up in 2016.

  • Bar Nimbus. Flashy steampunk-ish place in the Cool Docks. Maybe too cool, I guess?

  • Masse, a popular pool and poutine hang-out, ended their run in 2016.

  • La Stazione. Former Jing'An Italo place.

  • JZ Club. The storied Shanghai jazz venue basically took all their furniture and moved across town.

  • Funkadeli AKA "the one the Italians hang out at". Another Yongkang casualty that has found new life at a new location.

  • Fortune Cookie -- the popular US-style Chinese restaurant surprisingly closed up this year despite being quite awesome. That's the way the cookie crumbles... Very much missed this one.

  • Flame. Ex-steakhouse in Jing'an Kerry Center.

  • el Coctel. The trend-setting cocktails hang-out hung it up in the face of landlord disputes.

  • Cantina Agave. The long-running Mexican restaurant was re-branded as Tepito.

  • Le Cafe des Stagiaires also on Yongkang Lu. There's a trend.

  • Bocado -- erstwhile serving Spanish comfort food on Yongfu Lu.

  • Angelina -- now a tearoom for the damned. (Actually they just moved here.)

  • The Shelter, closing up after nine years on December 31. Heads down, hands up, testify.
