Inside The New Yuz Exhibit

The Yuz Museum just updated its 9,000-square-meter space with its first new exhibit in nearly a year. Here's a peek at what's in store.

Myth / History II: Shanghai Galaxy

, the long, long, long-awaited follow-up to Yuz Museum's debut exhibition last May—opened Monday night at the massive gallery/former airplane hangar in the West Bund. Prominent Chinese art historian Wu Hung is back on board as curator—backed by billionaire owner Budi Tek, he's been able to procure pieces from big-name artists like Maurizio Cattelan, JR, Li Hui, Mona Hatoum and Zhang Enli. Themes continue from last year's opening show, which we reviewed here, but here's a quick primer: the "Myth" focuses on conceptual art that comments on the production of contemporary art—that is, the concepts, creative processes and meanings extracted from the multimedia, multicultural artwork made today. Pieces on the "History" side, however, are very much tied to this specific locale—commenting on the development, identities and anxieties of modern Shanghai. Hung seems particularly fond of large-scale installations, which makes sense, given all that 9,000 square meter space he has to fill—and the works currently on show, which span all manner of media, come together impressively. We went in for a peek yesterday. Here's a taste of what's in store.
