ROCKBUNDLESS Soundstage (hosted by ROCKBUND and OKOK) is a three-day music festival celebrating and revitalizing the Capitol Theatre, located on the banks of Suzhou Creek just before it meets the Huangpu River. Inviting seven bands to perform inside the theater before its upcoming renovation, the project is a perfect meeting of old and new, as some of the scene's most exciting voices look to "reawaken" the landmark building. The lineup includes the indie rock godfathers Carsick Cars, along with genre-bending electro-pop supergroup Mola Oddity, featuring renowned Mandopop singer Amber Kuo. The second evening hosts Shanghai spiritual jazz craftsmen Pu Poo Platter, NaraBara — blending Mongolian musical traditions with modern rhythms — and the Disco King live art project, initiated by Shu Zi-jun and Ricky of Click #15 fame. Night three closes with Beijing live electronica duo white+ and Shanghai dance art-punk renegades Absolute Purity, known for their explosive mix of post-punk, electronica, and psychedelic music. Beyond the concerts, the festival also features DJ rhythm fitness sessions, behind-the-scenes talks, dance healing workshops, and more, extending the experience beyond the stage and into the surrounding neighborhood while inviting people to form new connections with the century-old building. A distortion-blurring collision of past and present — it sounds like one heck of a way to reintroduce the Capitol Theatre to the public.
Songwriter, producer; singer, poet, are multi-talented musician Su Zixu - has been a staple of the folk, world music, and psych scene for years - amassing a legion of fans for his spellbinding arrangements and guitar skills, one that traverses across styles, regions, and more. After a three-year hiatus, he rejoins with his band, the Paramecia (featuring esteemed musicians such as Weng Quxian, Han Shufan, Chen Shunshun) as they return with their brand new album ‘Elegies and Joys’. Seminal rock outfit Hang on the Box - a household name across the globe as one of the first Chinese punk acts to perform outside of China - has evolved countless times over the past decade - shifting away from their feisty riot girl beginnings as singer Gia has leaned into her melodic side more and more. With more airy guitar riffs, psychedelic-tinged synthesizers and other electronic flourishes, the band has matured quite a bit - with their 2025 LP Spiritual War showcasing a band that’ll be ‘forever young, powerful, fresh, full of curiosity, and constantly surprising’. Sludge with a grunge spirit, Shenzhen’s DULL came out swinging in 2025 with their debut. Visceral, raw, and full of energy, their tracks begin as a pummeling assault and eventually (d)evolve into longer, sprawling explorations that sound almost improvised. They later returned this summer with their EP, History, Body, State, full of slow-burning, riff-heavy muddy jams that find singer Haifan Wen wailing mantras into the mic. Visceral and raw - the band is in the midst of a nationwide tour and will be supported by Shanghai’s own noise punk fanatics Moya and the doomy drone noise and ambient outfit OMNI II.
Ecke Wu, who put in her time as the singer for Shanghai shoegaze outfit Forsaken Autumn before heading to Europe, has been building quite the catalogue over the long years herself - following her own muse via lush, ethereal releases, including last year’s ‘A Dream Which One Cannot Awake From’. Steering clear of the thick walls of sound and distortion, layers of fuzz and synthesizers instead complement the singer’s heart laid bare, giving a sense of space to the emotional turmoil and melancholy that resonates across her dream pop soundscapes. Catch her tonight in the midst of her nationwide tour - with support from Shanghai shoegaze outfit The Numen.
Fresh blood over at Yangpu’s Mosh Space - a place that has been harboring and refining some of the region’s best indie acts - with a motley crew of indie rockers. The evening most significantly marks the return of Alone Together - who craft indie pop that hits that jangly 90s alt rock sweet spot with a bullseye. Also on hand are emerging shoegaze indie act Georgia Spark, Hangzhou indie pop ruffians ByeByePhobia, and freshly baked math rock outfit Screen. A lot of new names here - which only makes the lineup all the more intriguing.
Head bang your Sunday night away over at Pudong’s Cream Club as a spread of the metal scene’s newest and most nefarious characters converge including Gothic doom metal outfit Aeonian Silence, brutal death metal renegades Disowuxlion, death thrashers Dossuary - inspired by the greats of Sweden - and melodic death metal act Dossuary. Righteous.
