Welcome to 1920s Shanghai... kind of

Ever wanted to time-travel to Shanghai's legendary Great World without, you know, accidentally joining a gang or losing your life savings at a casino? Great World Dream at The Pearl is basically that, except with slightly better lighting and way more cocktails. Doors open at 6pm, the show runs 7–9pm, and a post-show concert starts at 10pm because obviously the party doesn't stop just because the actors want a break.

SmartShanghai Got a Sneak Peek

We got an exclusive first look at Great World Dream, and honestly, it is wildly fun, ridiculously impressive, and nothing like the usual shows at The Pearl. From jaw-dropping aerialists to secret rooms, stilt-walking jugglers, and interactive tasks that actually matter, this is not your standard stage spectacle. It is a whole new level of immersive chaos.

Directors Behind the Madness

The show is masterminded by Eric Paci and Brian Wang, the duo behind multiple immersive experiences in Shanghai. Eric has been living in the city for over a decade, and Brian arrived in 2011. Together, they have refined a formula where Eric handles the intricate choreography, timing, and performance details while Brian shapes the overall vision to make the whole thing sing. It is a perfect balance of chaos and control, the kind that only immersive theatre can pull off.

All Three Floors Are Your Playground

28 international performers turn the entire Pearl into a stage. That's right, not just a stage, every stairwell, hallway, and secret door is fair game. Hidden rooms, rooftop casinos, stilt-walking jugglers, tarot readings that might actually be accurate. Yes, we know, it's a lot.

Unlike Sleep No More, where you quietly creep around pretending to be invisible, here you talk to people, complete tasks, get paid for secrets, and actively affect character storylines. You don't just watch, you're in the story. And no two nights are ever the same. Come once, see a story. Come back three times, and you might finally figure out what's happening... maybe.

Secrets, Scavenger Hunts, and Cash

From the moment you enter, you get some money to play with because, apparently, a fake casino is more fun if you feel slightly rich. Complete tasks, dig up secrets, and interact with characters who will happily pay you for the dirt. It's like a 1920s scavenger hunt crossed with Clue, except with jazz, cocktails, and the occasional murder plot (probably).

Every character has a story, and they're all intertwined. You can follow a gangster one night, a fortune-teller the next, or just wander and see what you stumble into. Improv-heavy performances mean nothing is entirely predictable, and everything is ridiculously fun.

Bars, Booze & Tea-Inspired Mischief

Ana Souza, formerly of dive bar Post No Bills (RIP), will be serving up drinks on the third-floor bar. Her character, a former prostitute turned bartender and information broker, trades secrets for extra cash. She's mixing tea-inspired cocktails with Shanghai's very own Hai Seas Distillery spirits, gin, vodka, or whiskey, served in teacups for full old-timey vibes. Hot tip: if you're feeling lucky at the casino, Ana's character might hand out extra cash for completing her tasks... if you're clever enough to play along.

555 RMB gets you three hours of free-flow drinks across both bars. Come early for dinner before the show starts, or order food throughout the night while uncovering secrets, gossiping with gangsters, and maybe finding yourself recruited into a mystery you did not even know existed.

Why You Should Go

Because life is short, Shanghai is weird, and FOMO is real once word gets out:

  • Following people around like a slightly unhinged spy
  • Talking to characters instead of just clapping politely
  • Low-stakes gambling, secret bars, and miniature plot twists
  • Drinking tea-inspired cocktails in teacups while maybe getting your fortune read
  • Getting lost, finding yourself, and then getting lost again

Basically, if you like immersive chaos, mystery, and booze-fueled exploration, this is your jam. Come once, come twice, come five times, the story will be different each time, and the drinks will still be strong.

And the Night Does Not End There

The show runs from 7pm to 9pm, but the chaos continues upstairs from 10pm with The Pearl's late-night tribute concerts. Better yet, entry to the afterparty concerts is already included with your Great World Dream ticket.

Afterparty lineup:

You can also buy tickets separately for the tribute concerts if immersive theatre is not really your thing, which, okay, fair enough. But consideringGreat World Dream tickets already include access to the afterparty concerts, it is kind of a ridiculously good deal.
