Tokyo's famously line-heavy hamburger steak spot Hikiniku to Come has landed on Donghu Lu, in that new F&B hub Fufu, bringing its simple, counter-only setup to Shanghai. Freshly ground beef, grilled over charcoal in front of you, served with rice.
On weekdays, just after 11am, you might still walk straight in. By noon, a line usually forms, but it moves quickly. Evenings and weekends will probably be busier.
Order and pay at the door, then take a seat at the curved counter. The most common set is three hamburger steaks for 128rmb, with a raw egg, plus miso soup and rice, both refillable. You can also add drinks or small sides if you want to make it a fuller meal.
Each patty comes one at a time, straight off the grill. There's a row of condiments, fermented bean paste, pickles, chili powder, and more, and the staff will suggest their preferred order: first plain, then with grated radish and ponzu, and finally with rice and raw egg.
Simple, juicy, and quietly satisfying. Not the biggest meal, but a solid one. Stepping inside does feel a bit like dropping into a small Tokyo counter.
