This concert features soprano María Cristina Kiehr and classical guitarist Pablo Márquez presenting Schubert’s works for voice and guitar, in what is described as the China premiere of this programme. The programme brings together a selection of Schubert songs from different stages of his creative life.

This programme focuses on Schubert’s art songs performed in a version for voice and guitar. While many of Schubert’s Lieder are commonly known in their piano-accompanied form, this concert presents a selection arranged for guitar accompaniment, marking its first full presentation in China.

The programme includes 18 Schubert songs spanning different periods of his creative life. The selected works draw on poetry by writers such as Goethe, Schiller, von Collin, and Schlegel, forming a set that highlights Schubert’s Romantic-era songwriting across different moods and styles.

María Cristina Kiehr is a soprano born in Argentina. She studied at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis under René Jacobs. Early in her career, she performed with leading early music figures such as Gustav Leonhardt, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Philippe Herreweghe, Frans Brüggen, Jordi Savall, and others.
She has also collaborated with ensembles including Concerto Köln, Freiburger Barockorchester, Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, and the Vienna Philharmonic.
She is a co-founder of La Colombina and the Daedalus Ensemble and has extensive experience in Renaissance and 17th-century repertoire. She also performs in duo settings with various instruments including classical guitar with Pablo Márquez. She has recorded extensively for harmonia mundi France and performs internationally.

Pablo Márquez is an Argentine classical guitarist known for his wide stylistic range and international concert career. He performs in major venues including the Concertgebouw, Teatro Colón, Elbphilharmonie, and Philharmonie de Paris. He has collaborated with composers such as Luciano Berio, György Kurtág, and Mauricio Kagel.
His recordings for ECM New Series, including Musica del Delphin, have received international recognition. He has also recorded award-winning works including a Schubert album with cellist Anja Lechner. He currently teaches at the Hochschule für Musik Basel and gives masterclasses worldwide.

This concert offers a rare chance to hear Schubert’s songs reimagined through voice and classical guitar rather than the more familiar piano accompaniment. With María Cristina Kiehr and Pablo Márquez performing together, it presents a focused exploration of Schubert’s lyrical writing across different stages of his career, in a programme making its China debut.
