Summer Cocktails Porn 2016

A selection of summer libations from Shanghai's classiest cocktails emporiums. Here's a few interesting options on the drinks menu...

  • Mango Disco @ Barules

Ticking this summer's tiki cocktail box is the Mango Disco at Barules. Made with mango, orange, and lime juice, this one should be a cloying fruit bomb. But proprietor Sam Kuan tempers it with the tannic, pleasantly bitter flavors of homemade tea syrup and rum infused with yerba maté, a potent South American tea. 80rmb.

  • Basil Daiquiri @ Glam

Glam's Basil Daiquiri is the perfect drink for "I don't like the taste of alcohol" people. Coconut rum, pineapple juice, honey syrup, fresh basil, lemon, and lime make this cocktail dangerously quaffable. And every night before 9pm, you can quaff these at two-for-one prices. 88rmb+10%.

  • Hopped Piña Nueva @ The Cannery

Coconut rum, lime juice, piña colada mix, and beer. These sound more like the contents of a saturated bar towel than the recipe for a cocktail, and yet, The Cannery has somehow made the whole thing work. They mix this one with their very own "secret piña colada mix". A splash of hoppy Ballast Point Grunion Pale Ale gives it a crisp edge. Costs 88rmb.

  • Sage Smash @ EPIC

The Smash is one of those cocktails that originated in some stuffy 19th century gentleman's club. It's said to be the prototype of drinks like the Mint Julep and the Mojito. Owner Cross Yu's version is built on a rum shrub, which is an infusion of herbs, rum, fruit and usually something acidic, like vinegar. It's stirred with lemon and soda then finished with a dash of chocolate bitters, fragrant fresh sage leaves, and a dried orange slice. 88rmb.

  • Pink Grapefruit Gin Sour @ Fellas

Formerly Shen, the only thing that the Fellas team has done to this place is change the name and put pizzas on the menu. The décor, the wraparound terrace with panoramic Huangpu views, and the drink menu remain this same. This mix is a summer no-brainer. Take gin add lemon juice, sugar, and egg whites. Then throw in grapefruit juice and a splash of grapefruit syrup. Costs 88rmb.

  • Sense of Happiness @ Sense Cocktail Club

Will Sense Cocktail Club pick up where recently closed el Coctel left off? Probably not. Drinks here are well made, but are mostly by-the-book classics. They do, however, offer a few house selections. This is one of them, and it's pretty good. Basically, it's a fancy Cognac fizz. Remy Martin VSOP is shaken with lemon juice, tea syrup, egg whites, and a bit of bubbly before being served in a martini glass. 88rmb.
