The newest addition to Shanghai's alternative clubbing scene, The Shelter is a no-frills basement club offering up the cornerstones of a great night out: cheap drinks, great atmosphere, and creative music. Large dance floor for bigger events and a great lounge area in the back for more low-key nights. Check the listings for individual event information.
Please the photographer who took our dancing pixs last Friday night ( May 9th, 2008) contact me.
I really want to get those pixs of me dancing with my friend. I was the girl with long hair, and in red broad pants.
Thanks alot.
It has a good concept, affordable drink, cool people but the Music is dissapointed. And yet, I was realize that this place is kinda dangerous since its located underground so there is no air coming in and some people will feel hard to breath, besides there is only one exit door so if there is something happen such fire is going to be chaos. In my opinion dont just think about a cheap drink but need to think about your safety also.
I really love this place! it makes me feel that i'm out of china, while i'm there! A lot ot people u c everytime! So there's a Shelter community huh! And that's a good thing!
The entrance to this underground style dance joint is unassuming enough. When my buddy first led me up the street to this place, I thought we had turned on the wrong street. There’s no sign of any kind of nightlife on Yongfu whatsoever. There’s only what looks like the entrance to a cave at Number 5 with the discreet, yet distinct “The Shelter” sign illuminating it in neon yellow. You walk down the stairs into a tunnel about 10 meters long lit only by dim track lighting at your feet. It’s that nice kind of touch that makes you wonder whether you are walking into dance club or an underground fight club/satanic cult. Fun, right?
Anyway, when the hallway peters out, you find yourself in a well sized dance hall with a liquor bar (mixed drinks for about 20RMB) to your left and a beer bar in the back where you came in (bottles starting at 15RMB). The walls, ceiling, floor, supporting columns, etc. are all black (of course). It’s pretty clear that this area is made for one thing and one thing alone, to get down to the music. As you proceed forward through the dance hall, there is a set of three bunkers which have been turned into a lounge area. The central one is relatively darker than the other two, with just stools and tables attached to the walls for resting drinks. The other two lounges, off to the left and right respectively, are better lit to show off the concave arches of the (supposed) former bomb shelter that you are sitting in, decked out in a mosaic of silver and mirrored tile. The sofas and the rest of the furniture here, while minimal and of course black, provide a nice private place to take a break when you aren’t out on the floor hearing one of the local DJs spinning up a storm. A word of advice though, the architecture in these bunkers are particularly good at projecting your voice in unexpected ways to the other side of the table. Remember to be polite, or you might find yourself in a fight club after all.
hi all
i was at Shelter last night (Saturday 23th February) and i wanted to know the guys who performed the music (loud bass electro beats with MC's)
thanks for replying if anyone knows
Yes. The drinks are cheap and I think the music is perfect. The Folks there, are really nice. I med some of them and i think they are really friendly...
The shelter is really full at midnight. Before midnight it's a bit empty but then it's really full. I like the Shelter. Well, visit them to make you're own opinion!
To me,Shelter bar is unlike those where rich people spend all their money on expensive drinks and get socialised with business people around the club. Its more like a secret deep underground bar that is full of fun and Mysterious.once I walked into the shelter,it made me feel like I was walking towards a cave.its so dark from the entertrance and deeper inside there is bar area, simple but kind of different than other bars I have been to.
anyways, you will believe what you see.my suggestion is see it to yourself if you doubt it
over hyped. thought i was in a hostel bar with people who were on lots of drugs and not able to afford razor blades. way too many guys too, why no girls here that are not DJs girlfriends? :(
