Popular Bund lounge. They get busy at night, with live latin music parties, salsa nights, ladies nights, and weekday events like their Tuesday salsa party. It's a good, casual-but-impressive destination for friends and guests. The quiet window seats in the back are good for dates, and groups will dig the couches in the front. Sometimes they bring in big DJs like Questlove, but most times the music is Latin or soulful / jazzy house. They also have a cigar lounge and a molecular cocktail bar called el Lab. Note: men cannot wear shorts or flip-flops.

So, I'm reviewing Unico the nightclub, not restaurant.

This is currently my crew's favorite spot to party. We have been way too many times over the Christmas-New Year's holiday period, but great memories were made.

    Here's the quick and dirty:

Upscale night spot catering to a more mature (not old) crowd of the movers and shakers in Shanghai.

Definitely a dress -to-impress place, where you will feel out of place in anything but your best. Great venue for people watching, as the place is consistently filled with beautiful people.

Music is Latina-inspired, but they change it up depending on the day of the week. Saturdays seem to best , and busiest, and Tuesdays they do a salsa night.

A place where people actually dance, and many dance well.

Yes, it's expensive [read: 110rmb for a Gin & Tonic], or better yet, opt for reserving a table. 2 bottle minimum which is like 2500rmb for the low-end of their bottle selection.

Service is quite good, which helps take some of the sting out of the price tag.

I would say, Unico may be the hottest club in Shanghai, and we haven't been disappointed yet. Great place to brush shoulders, meet new and interesting people, or meet someone sexy on the dance floor.

Yesterday I joined a business dinner in "Unico" restaurant.
Superb location, spectacular look to the illuminated PuDong skyline. Definitly a place to attract business friends.
Staff was very friendly, helpful and with good English skills, even the lady in the cloak corner.
Guests mainly business people; the overall atmosphere was living, but neither too loud nor disturbing.
But coming to the main item, the food:
I had a tenderloin steak, orderd medium, with fried vegetables as side dish. As a starter, we followed the waiter`s suggestion and ordered a combination of different vegetarian dishes.
To make a long story short: Every single dish was very, very good. The meat was medium fried, good taste. Two skewers of vegetables, too much to eat for me alone. Starter selection was really good.
On the negative side I found the dishes a little bit too cold, maybe they placed the plates somewhere without heating facility.
Anyhow, this place according to my opinion is worth to recommend, but please check your wallet before, it surely will be much thinner after the visit......... .
    Nice but expensive

I just have been there yesterday, it was nice, good location but as many people say, it is really expensive.
We pay like 500RMb per person, with a glass of Wine, for Shanghai it is really expensive even for a Western restaurant on the Bund.

With my brother in town we decided to treat him with a nice dinner at Unico. Ambiance-wise a great place, very nice decor and a gorgeous bar area.
We got a nice table and ordered Aperitif drinks. The drinks were very well prepared, in my case an really excellent Dirty-Martini.

They offer quite some nice menus, both tapas tasting menu and Signature menu, however to go for the ala carte option on this day.

For the hot starters my girlfriend and I wanted to get the Organic Egg with Pata Negra ham and potatoes, my brother decided for the Slow Cooked Egg with Jerusalem Artichokes. Here the first service experience happened. We ordered the dishes and the waiter repeated our order with "three organic eggs with pata negra". When I told her that this is not what we just ordered, she replied that "I am the one who is wrong" because that the egg with artichokes is not available and that my brother "has to take" the other one... !?
Well.. maybe telling your customers in advance so that they can select something else would be a good idea?

Anyway, for the mains my brother and I selected tenderloin steaks (400 RMB each) with sides (40 RMB each), my girlfriend chose the Pan Fried Scallops with Smoked Sauce and Yunnan Truffle. This is a dish you can select either as Tapa dish (98 RMB) or specifically as main dish (268 RMB).

We got a bottle of good white wine and waited for our starters. The hot starters were excellent, very nice composition and taste. Highly recommended. In regards to the main dishes, the two tenderloin steaks were excellent, too. However when the main dish (the scallops) for my girlfriend arrived we saw that the dish consisted of two small scallops and a bit of truffle foam.
In our opinion this is in no way an appropriate size for a main dish. We asked the waiter whether this is a mistake and they served the Tapa version of the dish instead. She told us she is going to ask the chef and came back a couple of minutes later telling us that this dish is exactly as intended.
We expressed that we are very unhappy: If you offer a 280 RMB main dish consisting of two scallops and truffle foam I am not sure how they will offer the Tapa version of 98 RMB then? Maybe they only serve half a scallop in that case :)? The manager finally arrived and he handled the situation a bit better at least. After some arguments they prepared another one scallop for my girlfriend. He offered to spend a drink later at the bar, however we decided to leave after desserts.

It is really a pity. We enjoyed a nice evening up to the point where we had to argue about food size in a restaurant where we happily spend more than 2000 RMB. The food quality and taste is great, however we left on a disappointed note regarding service. For a premium price you have to get both right.

    Micro food, macro price

Went there with a large group. Restaurant kept pushing the set menu, but since it was our first time there we wanted to order a la carte and try items off the standard menu. After getting the food, we now understand why.

After receiving several of the tapas dishes, we were shocked at the teeny, tiny portions. Calling them small dishes or tapas doesn't really describe it - it was more like tasting size. A shrimp tapas had 1 shrimp, cut into a few pieces, that tasted good but was no more than a small bite with a few people sharing. Price was off the charts though. Would it have been too much to expect a few shrimp in that dish, and not just 1 cut into pieces? The rest of the servings were like that. To be honest, the food tasted OK and the service was great, but we left there starving and with a huge bill.

Eat first, and only go for drinks. Gave it 3 stars mainly for service, decor, and drinks, with big deduction for tiny food portions
