Japanese restaurant UMI, which was led by a German chef and located in a fancy shopping mall, has folded. That chef, Bjoern Alexander, had previously come from the storied The French Laundry in California and rolled up in Shanghai with high-end Japanese ambitions. Alas, just over a year after opening, it closed up shop quietly. The consensus seems to be the location wasn't right for the restaurant's price and positioning. Alexander left the restaurant in December and has already moved back to Hong Kong. R.I.P.
