Oriol Marès & Talal Fayad Quartet fuses clarinet and Arabic oud into a sound that bridges Arab modal traditions, Latin polyrhythms, and jazz freedom. Barcelona-born clarinettist Oriol Marès’ improvisational approach draws from European conservatoire training while actively engaging with folk idioms from Iberia and the Americas. In contrast, Talal Fayad, originally from Syria, brings a deep knowledge of maqam-based music and has been increasingly involved in European experimental scenes. Together, they weave those influences into a vibrant Mediterranean sound, reimagining the region's musical plural identity. The pair will be performing at JZ Club this Wednesday and Thursday - with help from double bassist Danny Zanker.

Electronic music promoters Cyber Budha present a special edition of their series with a trio of world music electronic acts taking over the Dream Theater. Traverse the borders of geography and hearing, with three “electronic nomads” who translate culture through sound: the Isan Cyber voice from Thailand, The Hymmapan Electron; the Chengdu duo Taiga, who inscribe nomadic Mongolian DNA into urban rhythms; and the traveling musician MICO刘为, who sketches the myriad aspects of journeys with electronic music. Let ancient spiritual rhymes resonate with future frequencies, conducting a profound sonic practice for the souls on the dance floor. Hell yeah.

Mosh Space gets riotous tonight with a trio of acts with a penchant for red-blooded rock and roll theatrics. You’ve got Wuhan’s The Hospital, who traverse across various musical landscapes with conviction and a hefty foundation of 80s art rock, 90s alt rock, and psychedelic pop. Also on hand are Shanghai psychedelic sound explorers Weather King, whose pop sensibilities bubble just beneath the surface of their shifting, jazzy, playful brand of psych pop. Finally, there’s L'etranger - a fresh name to me - who blend post-punk, Britpop, reggae, and post-rock. Sleeper gig of the week.

There’s something comforting about having Brain Failure there in your corner - a band, despite everything, that still manages to hit those roaring anthemic highs with aplomb and bullish charm. While the band underwent substantial reshuffling six years prior, they wisely used the road and endless tours to win back their groove and, in some aspects, evolve. Retaining its nostalgia for no-holds-barred punk melodies whilst shaking things up musically and finding rebellion within the details, it’s clear that the band still has it. They’re on their latest nationwide tour.

Hupo

Long-standing Xi’an instrument rock Hupo (dropping their previous English moniker Amber) forges a new, bold path on their assured, confident and evolutionary new LP, a few sparks, released with 1724 Records. A dramatic shift into krautrock territory is only the beginning of fresh surprises found within the eight tracks here - with the band injecting psychedelic and jazz vitality, ambient and experimental music sensibilities, and even some traditional music in for good measure. It’s a deconstruction of their post rock roots that shakes everything readily loose - allowing their melodies to wander forth amongst hills of repeating motifs and clouds of sonic abstraction - a scenic journey rich and bursting with life. A transformative record that acts as a reintroduction to one of the scene’s most unsung acts.

Veteran metalcore act Soulitude - one of the scene’s most dependable and riotous acts bids the scene farewell (for now!) with a bash over at FENRIR tonight with two bands they shared the stage with at their founding in 2022. "Sharing is caring" has always kept these bands close, allowing them to bring their own unique brand of brutality to audiences everywhere. Bassist (and Fenrir owner) Beautiful Lloyd will be slapping the bass hard for both Chimera Cult and Blood of Life. The legend himself, Lord Mark, will be behind the drums for Chimera Cult and Soulitude. And the man known for his out-of-this-world riffs and solos, UJ the Three Times, will be shredding for both Blood of Life and Soulitude. Keeping the night alive after the bands finish will be JAAL the Machine (Sal, aka Skinny Brown), delivering a very special midnight performance of live acid house using analog machines. Tears are Metal AF!
