Chefs DeAille Tam and Simon Wong opened and ran Bo Shanghai in Five on the Bund a few years back, winning a Michelin star for their efforts. Then the place closed. Oops. But now they are back, after spending 2019 traveling around China, and they are getting ready to open a fancy new place. Obscura describes itself as "innovative modern Chinese cuisine" while "expressing the classic flavors of Chinese dining with equal measures of respect and innovation, Chinese culture and Western techniques". Okay. It's not open yet but already they promise a "captivating journey filled with unexpected and profound moments." They are aiming high.
The tiny space is in a three-story villa on Xikang Lu and reservations are already hard to get; they open in mid-November and by the time I called, they were almost booked until the end of the month for their 2,000rmb set menu (reservations require a 500rmb deposit). If super-luxe fine Chinese/western dining is your thing, you'll want to book ASAP. See their details here.
