Strapped for cash and ideas this festive season? SmartShanghai has scoured the streets of our fair city for a whole host of yuletide gifts, all priced at less than 100rmb.
Jewelery

Jewelery will always have a place under our Christmas tree, and although the sky's the limit as to what you could spend, it's also possible to pick up some great baubles for less than 100kwai – without resorting to street-side nickel-based tat. Head to teeny-tiny Fuxing Lu vintage store Hummingbird for pretty earrings by Japanese brand ukA – we love these striking peacock feather danglers (100rmb). Not unique enough for you? Then venture East along Fuxing to Meido Handcraft where you can select from a treasure trove of gorgeous ceramic, wooden and crystal beads to create your own necklace or bracelet in store.
Homeware

Stuff for the home always makes for a welcome gift. Head to The Cottage Shop on Wulumuqi for vintage inspired enamel cups for just 20rmb a pop, or else Spinning Wheel's quirky blue and white crockery – sparrow-adorned plates are a snip at 25rmb.
Coffee cups

For those on the go, consider a cool eco-can from Taiwanese designers PLA Studio – pick up one of the reusable ceramic coffee cups for just 99rmb from the Liuli Museum shop. Buying for a Michael Jackson-obsessed loved one? The Cottage Shop have 'King of Pop' versions for 38rmb. A bargain!
Colorful chopsticks

Related to the above, and similarly eco-friendly, a set of reusable, transportable and down-right desirable chopsticks makes for an eminently thoughtful gift here in the Middle Kingdom. Liuli Museum shop have colourful plastic ones, cunningly housed in a test tube, meaning your nearest and dearest can look really cool and save the world for just 43rmb.
Luxe city guide

Buying for a jet-setter? Ensure they steer clear from less salubrious neighbourhoods on their next city break by gifting them a Luxe city guide, priced at 80rmb from Platane. Packed with only the classiest of tips for cities like Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing, it's a darn sight higher end than your common-or-garden Lonely Planet...
Tech-ccessories

Whilst you're not going to pick up any i-prefixed gadgets for less than 100kwai, there are some great gifts for tech-fans, particularly down at the gloriously kitsch – not to mention cheap – Happy Salt in TianziFang. Go all retro with a gramophone-shaped analog acoustic speaker for the iPhone (70rmb), or else there's adorable panda iPad cases for 88rmb.
Candles

Candles can say a lot of things, can't they? They're festive, but they're also romantic, and, assuming you're not 100% relying on them, kinda decadent. Simply Life have offerings for all of that and more, including Christmas tree-shaped green ones for 68rmb, or Buddha types for 78rmb. They use 100% natural oils and would make a great gift, we reckon.
Chocolate

For us, Christmas is synonymous with over-indulgence, and to that end, chocolate always makes a welcome gift. With a 100rmb budget, though, the likes of fancy-schmancy chocolatiers Godiva are, alas, out the window – however, head to newish boutique hotel Andaz for an eyeful of their delightful patisserie, Eclair. They have sizable chocolate snowmen (88rmb) or more grown up, choc-covered dried fruits (65rmb) all beautifully packaged in pink and brown.
For kids

As excited as we get at this time of year, our enthusiasm is no match for that of little ones. Apparently these bendy maple wood and textile Anamalz are all the rage amongst toddlers these days: our favorite is the super cute Torosaurus, and for the full range, head to Lollipop (69 – 99rmb). For something a bit more, well, educational, older children might like a set of wooden alphabet stamps (40rmb) and ink (10rmb) from Cute Stuff in Jingan Villas.
Children again...

Sticking with kids' stuff for now, RuWa studios have some adorable Chinese-style slippers for tiny feet. Decorated with bells and dragons, we're not certain how practical they are, but from 38rmb – 88rmb, we'll buy 'em anyway. The craftsy studio also have colourful cloth zodiac animals – pick up a dragon for just 36rmb to ring in the new year.
Soaps and lotions

Nice-smelling treats are always good to give and this year is no exception. Recently opened on Wuyuan Lu, Flow stocks TCM-inspired soaps and lotions. Beautifully packaged, pick up small size bars of Jasmine (hydrating) or Enoki (purifying) for 60rmb, or perhaps Rose-infused shampoo also for 60rmb. Or, The Cottage Shop has delightful room fragrances by Simplemill in either Wild Rose or Spring Bud for 98rmb a pop.
Notebooks

You can't go wrong with a good notebook, and to that end, get thee to TianziFang where Shoubai Gallery has some decidedly glam lacey versions from 48rmb, panda-adorned for 68rmb, or futuristic holographic covers for 38rmb. For something altogether more classical, Xingmu Handcrafts have some pretty dapper, leather-bound A5-size books from 35 – 98rmb.
Bits'n'bobs

Charms of the key, bag or phone variety make great stocking fillers. There's tons of cheap 'uns out there, but for something that little bit unique, we like Story in the Box, where knitted snowman or peapod phone accessories go for 25rmb, woolen monkey bag charms for 29rmb, or luxurious-feeling suede leaves for just 19rmb. They also have handmade apple cozies (39rmb), which not only prevent your fruit from succumbing to the winter chill, but they also make pretty nifty tree decorations too. *** Happy shopping, Shanghai, and a very merry Christmas to one and all!
