Non-Fugly Rainwear: Where to Get It

It's still raining. Screw it, time to get some rain wear that actually looks good... Here's how to be beautiful while you're drenched and sopping.

From drizzle to downpour, Shanghai does not play when it comes to the rain. This city is wet for a good quarter of the year, and it’s usually hell on your wardrobe. The rain here pretty much has this sacrificial relationship with our clothes, taking white sneakers like a Hawaiian volcano takes virgins, only nothing is ever appeased. There's no controlling this unpredictable onslaught of wetness, but at least there are some solid rainwear options out there to stay dry. Here are some places to get rain-resistant gear if you’re looking for an upgrade on flimsy convenience store parkas and umbrellas. Triple Major The Marios trench coat, 3900rmb (left) and Marios rain poncho, 2500rmb (right). Right now Shaoxing Lu concept store Triple Major is stocking some statement raingear from Japan-born, Milan-based label Marios. This trench serves as the antidote to that typically leggy Burberrian mode: it’s an artful, draping silhouette for people who believe cuts that reveal less, reveal more… or something. Also, if you like the poncho concept but dislike actual ponchos, this one from Marios might change your mind. Some strong futuristic, high-priestess-y vibes happening here. Price Point: These jackets are probably only feasible for the well-heeled creative type. Still, Triple Major offers a lot of neat stuff at many price points, particularly its T-shirts, which run from 150-300rmb. American Apparel Unisex Nylon Taffeta Rain Parka, 600rmb. Buying a raincoat in the summer can be a tricky. No matter how cool something looks, there’s a good chance that the heat will bash its value against the jagged, sweaty rocks of reality. In the end you may just need to go simple with a lightweight, no-frills jacket that will keep you dry. American Apparel’s unisex nylon parka could be a good option for that. Nylon is nice because it’s very light and can take tons of abuse. And since American Apparel is big on fit and single colors, you have a lot of good-looking options for what’s basically a body tarp. Price Point: American Apparel is cheaper than a multibrand shop but pricier than fast fashion. Prices can range between 200 to 800rmb. VANCL 3-in-1 Technical Field Jacket, 460rmb (left) and Protective Jacket in a Bag, 460rmb (right) VANCL is a Chinese fast-fashion brand that exists only online. If you give zero cares about how you look in the rain, and just want something cheap to throw on your back, VANCL is as good a choice as any. There’s no need to really describe it, since “Protective Jacket in a Bag” is probably the most candid product name on this list. Anyway, this jacket does the same thing as the American Apparel parka but is way cheaper. For women, there’s this 3-in-1 field jacket. Currently VANCL is in the midst of a massive sale; so if affordable basics are your jam, get ready to clean up. Price Point: Similar to Uniqlo. Sale notwithstanding, T-shirts go for around 180rmb; jackets around 400-900rmb. No mortal blows to your bank account here. Aegis Bridge & Burn Waxed Parka, 1372rmb (left) and Shades of Gray Waxed Parka, 1598rmb (right). In a city where men’s fashion is largely tiered across Uniqlo, Zegna, and “Tony the Tailor” types, Aegis is your go-to for investment piece gear from labels like Robert Geller. For dudes looking to up their rainwear game this year, Aegis has a bunch of nice options. A waxed (i.e., water-resistant) jacket is always a nice thing to have in your closet. These ones, from Bridge & Burn and Shades of Grey, look good -- and, at under 2000 kuai, won’t cost you a kidney to own. Further up the price ladder you have this Steven Alan jacket, which has a nicer texture. The cool thing here is that, more than just being raincoats, all of these jackets are solid outerwear choices that will serve you well into the fall. Price Point: If you’re deep in the #menswear scene, Aegis is rad. But there’s a reason these are investment pieces. Prices can get up there. Expect things to range anywhere from 500 to 4000rmb. Taobao Where brick-and-mortars fail, Taobao is always there to deliver. It’s a really good option for bargain barrel rainwear, but also offers some rare designer goodness, too. For those who go bonkers for product re-thinks, there’s this Senz umbrella at 400rmb. The shape of it looks a bit funky at first, but in actual operation, the Senz is on some next level s***. It’s even racked up a bunch of awards for its construction and design and can handle 100 km/h winds. Senz umbrella, 400rmb For sentimental Hypebeasts and wealthy teenage males, there’s this 950rmb BAPE camo umbrella to consider. BAPE camo umbrella, 950rmb For those of you who like to keep things basic, there are these simple, single-color umbrellas (168rmb) from South Korean brand Lifework that come with matching bags. Lifework umbrellas, 168rmb Speaking of South Korean brands, there’s a sorbet-toned smattering of rain boots from South Korean label MGF, at 350rmb a pair. MGF rain boots, 350rmb Lastly, for girls who get money, these Chelsea-cum-rain boots from Jimmy Choo are pretty killer, but run for a whopping 2741rmb. Jimmy Choo rain boots, 2741rmb Price Point: Taobao straddles a price spectrum from dirt-cheap to ludicrously expensive. Buy as you feel. By the way -- for the uninitiated, seller ranking goes heart > diamond > crown. The more diamonds a vendor has, the better their trust. And if the vendor has a crown, safety is a given.
