In case you're bored of yoga, HIIT, and cross fit, the latest branch in Shanghai’s ever-growing fitness tree is UFC Fit — or UFC Gym outside of China. A place that, despite connotations, is geared for regular joes as well as herculean cage fighting machines.

UFC Fit's first location in China, its flagship store, is due to open up some time at the end of December in Lanhai International Plaza, in the center of Lujiazui. It will offer a big range of mixed martial arts taught by several world champions including five-time world boxing champion Alicia Ashley from the US. Classes include boxing, muay thai, kickboxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, its own version of HIIT (Daily Ultimate Training), fitness conditioning, and other classes such as yoga, women's self-defense and a youth program for kids.

Facilities-wise, it's gone all out, shoving tech into all its equipment, so your trainer knows exactly how much you've been slacking off on the treadmill through the connected UFC Fit app, and a 'RESET' monitoring system for its air, water and energy.

However, until that opens, you can get a taste of it at the octagon-shaped cage pop-up gym that opened this September in the same mall. It has a floor space that was hosting a lunch-hour workout when we visited, along with numerous punching bags, a treadmill, weights, a body composition analyzer to check your muscle to fat ratio, and a device which analyzes your fitness level/skills. Looks a bit like those dance machines you find in arcades.

Taster classes are available at the pop-up gym and can be booked via its WeChat mini program. Memberships for the gym and unlimited access to its classes will come in three-month, six-month, and one-year packages and cost between 3,800-8,800rmb. That isn’t bad compared with some gyms that cost 12,000rmb per year, plus the added kudos you get to your Insta feed when you're posting workouts with celebrity fighters.

Though you might have to pose with cut-outs in the near future.
