[In Focus]: The Shanghai Biennale 2021

Checking out the third phase of one of this year's biggest exhibitions down at PSA.

A picture-driven look at what's new, cool, special and weird about Shanghai. This is the view from the ground, through the lens of our photographers.
  • The 13th Shanghai Biennale at the Power Station of Art started last year and is now entering it's third and final stage. The theme is 'Bodies of Water', and displayed are a total of 76 artworks by 64 artists and groups; it all spans three floors and then some.

  • Bodies of Water is understood in three ways: water as the element, connecting ecosystems together; water inside the human body and the vital need for surviving; and water in relation to Shanghai. After all, this city did start off as a fishing village, and the exhibit's location at the mouth of the Huangpu River is not a coincidence.

  • The principles of Bodies of Water embody the uncertainty of planning the Biennale, as well as exploring how curatorial practices change alongside the shift of global conditions. The Chief Curator of the 13th Shanghai Biennale is Andrés Jaque, an international architect, writer and curator.

  • You have until July 25 to check it out. Visit their website for more details. Tickets are around 30rmb and are available at the door. Book tickets through their WeChat Mini-Program, as crowds are expected during the holidays. Here is the event listing, with address and details here.
