[The New Deals]: The Australia Day Edition 2018

Jan 24, 2018 | 13:55 Wed
January 26 is Australia Day, and, like Columbus Day, it's a bit of a touchy subject. Colonization and all that. But here're a handful of Aussie-friendly venues taking it in light-hearted stride, with a selection of meals, free-flows and events tailored for the bludgers, the bogans, the mugs and the... cane toads? The internet suggests that means someone from Queensland which, I believe, is in Australia.

Every year(ish), modern Australian restaurant and lounge Kakadu puts on a daytime Australia Day celebration: free-flow BBQ, free-flow booze, live music, and kid-friendly activities. Plus, very important, pavlova bake-off. Australian Chamber of Commerce members get a discount; 400rmb/200rmb for adult/child members, otherwise it's 480rmb/280rmb for adult/child non-members. "Kid" means 6-15 years old, joeys under 6 eat for free.

The Rooster starts its Australia Day specials on Thursday, going through until the Australian Open on Sunday, Jan 28. It's 40rmb and "down under" (heh) for Aussie brews, such as Mornington (of Mornington, Victoria), Toohey's and low-carb Pure Blonde. They've also got additional deals and offers on the Sunday Australian Open, but you'll have to head down to check it out. Those all run in addition to their regular deals.

Come for the 4.5 hour free-flow, stay for roast lunch with Queensland cricket legend Greg Ritchie at The Camel. Or the other way around. Greg Ritchie's played 30 Tests and 44 One Day Internationals for Australia in a career spanning 12 years and 24 centuries. He'll be there to share stories of his career in the '80s in his "inimitable colorful style," ie. there'll be swearing. The price is 395rmb for a three-course roast lunch, and that aforementioned free-flow.

Australian brewery (and frequent special guest on Shanghai's taps) Little Creatures opened up in Found 158. You might've seen it. We wrote about it here. Their grand opening is on Australia Day (how fortuitous!), and they're offering special prices on draft and bottles, music, performances, and complimentary "Aussie" snacks from 6 to 9pm. There'll also be a "special visit from an Aussie Legend" which, just going to guess here, maybe see the entry above. Unless they really managed to book Dame Edna.

Litlle Laundry's restaurant-ier little sister Lil' Laundry is doing a tap take over for the Australia Day weekend; from January 26 to February 2, there're 11 Australian craft beers, including KAIJU! Beer, Temple Brewery and Mornington Peninsula Brewery, hogging the bar. At 30rmb a pint, they're pretty cheap too. There're also deals on Aussie burgers, meat pies, and the like. That's from 6pm till late.
