Design War! Tokyo’s “niko and” Opens Flagship Across From Muji Flagship

Japanese lifestyle and retail brand niko and just opened a flagship store right opposite the Muji megastore. Nicely-designed-but-kind-of-bland war! Last Saturday, the line to get in had not yet died down, but I went anyway.

The 3,500 square meter store sells everything from clothes and tents to plants and coffee. You can buy your whole life here, basically, just like in Muji, except for less. The first floor is mostly women’s clothes and a miscellaneous collection of fashion accessories. Top floor is a Whole 775 Restaurant and Bar serving all kinds of Japanese-Western food. Dianping slagged the thin crusts, insipid cheese and 88rmb price.

There’s much to see here, but not much worth buying, especially when most items are not as budget friendly as you’d expect, and some are outrageously overpriced. Like a neon green hoodie for 999rmb, a pair of scissors for 300rmb, or a small rug for 9000rmb. Many people came in excited and left empty-handed. That being said, the place itself is cozy, warm and inviting, and there’s coffee and food, so definitely not the worst place to spend a Saturday afternoon. If you can’t get into Muji.

took a look yesterday and found it more expensive than Muji and honestly not much.... probably the most interesting thing of this is the cycling shop that re-opened on the bridge between Muji and this new store.... 3/F
