Cuivre

Good For: Really hungry people

Cuivre’s brunch is surprising for two reasons: one, the sheer amount of food you get and two, how affordable it all is. 188rmb gets you three courses plus a coffee, juice or smoothie. For each course, you can select from about half a dozen options, first a cold menu (salads, pates and smoked salmon), then a breakfasty course (eggs, omelets, fried plates), and finally a page of mains. We started with salmon rillettes marinated with lime and coriander and a goat cheese and grilled chicken salad, which was excellent -- probably the best thing that came out for the whole meal. Then we had eggs: Benedict and scrambled, with spicy chunks of sausage. Finally, we tried the croque monsieur and an entrecote rib eye (30rmb supplement), which came with frites and garlic butter. Everything was pumped with butter and rich sauces, cooked expertly and served promptly, with a smile. A huge, decadent feast in a beautiful dining room like this for 188rmb? It’s impossible to go wrong. Book, though, because the dining room was almost full on our (Saturday) visit.

Downstairs

Good For: Families

Every Saturday and Sunday from 10am 'til 3pm, Downstairs at URBN transforms into a cacophony of chatter, delicious aromas and tasty eats courtesy of Irish chef Siobhán Gough. It's an à la carte affair, the sizable menu regularly tweaked according to the season. Generally, though, you've got a nice balance of standard brunch fare (the Big URBN Breakfast for 95rmb, or an altogether lighter crab omelet for 90rmb), mixed up with more lunchy choices – burgers, salads and so on – all topped off with a devilish selection of desserts. To our minds at least, the most decadent meal of the week calls for quality booze, and with that in mind, Downstairs boasts no fewer than four variations on the classic Bloody Mary, all priced at a reasonable 65rmb a pop. Surroundings-wise, you've got that beautiful, tree-lined URBN courtyard, perfect for catching some sun – or indeed letting little ones run free. They're nicely catered for with a dedicated children's menu, as well as themed activities for occasions like Easter, Bloomsday and the like. A good option for lazy lounging, family affairs and day drinking, Downstairs gets the thumbs up come brunchtime.

The Waldorf-Astoria

Good For: A splurge

The Waldorf's weekly Sunday brunch is a luxurious, languorous movable feast. It begins in the hotel's iconic Long Bar. The moment you take your seat, a server arrives with a frosty flute of Veuve Clicquot and a plate of imported Fine de Claire #3 oysters shucked to order. The Waldorf does a brisk business in these bivalves. They receive shipments twice a week, making them arguably the freshest in town. For the next hour, it's an oyster and bubbly free-for-all, but that's just opening act. Come noon, you're escorted to Grand Brasserie for their super swish buffet. Here you can gorge on unlimited fresh shellfish, dim sum, gourmet pastries. There is even a bespoke crepe station. But before you go hog wild on all of that, save some room for their a la carte menu featuring red velvet pancakes, a crab cake Benedict, and a Reuben sandwich-inspired steak tartare -- quite delicious. The price might give you a bit of sticker shock: 888rmb+15% per person. But that gets you four hours of great eating, all-you-can-eat-oysters, and unlimited Veuve Clicquot as well as red and white wine. Come on. A little splurge never hurt anyone.

Sun: 11am-3pm

Maya

Good For: All things eggs

The egg is the cornerstone of any quality brunch, and mid-range Mexican restaurant Maya glorifies it in every possible permutation. You've got twelve, count 'em, twelve choices, all with a Mexican twist. You can get them wrapped in a breakfast burrito, fried over tortilla chips, smothered in red and green chili sauce. They even do their own eggs Benedict served over corn bread and drizzled with a red pepper holandaise (pictured above). And the best part is that it's all quite reasonably priced -- around 50rmb for a main. Feel free to hit the sauce while you're at it too. 125rmb gets you endless sangria, or you can upgrade to the margarita package for 165rmb. Finally, you can finish it all off with their homemade churros served with chocolate, strawberry sauce, and whipped cream.
