Shanghai Nights: Rooftop Raves, Album Releases… Just Stuff

All the nightlife events fit to cosume this weekend in Shanghai…

Feels like Friday, right, Shanghai? Feels like... something. Feels like the weather might be getting nicer?

Remember Darude's "Sandstorm" earlier this week? That was a pretty lame thing that happened.

Okay, so it's a super big deal when a venue re-opens their rooftop. Everyone gets super excited about it, like hoooolllyyyy SHITTTT. There's a few of those parties happening this weekend. Just FYI.

Having a party on my rooftop too this weekend, it's called Hanging Up My Laundry Sessions... Edition... Hanging Up My Laundry Sessions Chill Edition.

FRIDAY

Abbey road hosts in DJPJ for a night of 80s synth and disco hits. Cheap night at the bar with a happy hour special on all night -- 35rmb Asahis and house wine. No entry fee. Starts 8:30pm. 

Heim welcomes in Lawrence Lee, New York producer, Berlin resident, DJ, and label director, to bring his "tapestry of rave rhythms and explorations to the intimate house party club. Expect classic house, squelchy acid, Detroit-inspired elecro, and whatever else -- hey it's a journey. Local support from Cocoonics, Jais, Tatz, Starts 10pm. 120rmb at the door.

Legacy Beijing indie rawk band -- think The Strokes with Muse tendencies -- return to Shanghai after the Covid stuff put their national tour on the skids. A talented act and well-seasoned after more than a decade and a half in the game, and with TV reality show superstardom at their backs no less. Expect a big crowd of kids out supporting a Beijing success story. Their in town behind their latest album, so you can pick that up at the mercy table. 190rmb entry.Starts 8:30pm.

Trancelvania

This Friday intimate basement club Abyss is combining your two favorite things: the darker, macabre aspects of life and trance music. Expect crazy, blood dripping, buzz saw, crazy intense trance music from Ben NRG, DJB, Clair, Ikke, and Prymara. Good party for vampires with moves. 100rmb at the door. Starts 10pm.

Jack 4 Jack

"Jack in the one who gives you the power to jack your body!" Classic jacking house music night is back at Shanghai's beloved basement club Elevator. Juicy Tangerine gets this going for J.R.G., Finascia, and Echocatcher. Expect lots of dance floor oriented home in all stripes. Rhythm and soul for house music lovers. 9pm door. 80rmb, includes a shot.

Internationally reviews minimal techno artist SHAO plays a rare show in Shanghai behind his latest EP “Echo”, which sees the producer working in more ambient terrain. He's supported by French techno producer Paul Ritch making his Shanghai debut. One for the deep techno heads in this line-up combo of one of China’s most respected techno artists joining with a fresh talent from Europe. Long running China techno DJ Edison Chen in support. Starts 9:30pm. 150rmb at the door.

Two vintage rock selectors -- NoDJ and Don't Lie -- are holding down the music for a Friday night sock hop at Specters for BIG BAD CADILLAC. Expect classic sounds in the vein of rockabilly, swamp rock, garage and country rock, rhythm and blues, big beat -- the house that Carl Perkins built (maybe). Because rock and roll achieved perfection in 1954. Starts 10pm. No entry fee.

Shandong-based producer LJC makes the special trip down to ALL in Shanghai to release his latest UK bass album "Gene Tower". Supporting is "one of the top producers in the UK wave scene", Pholo. Next level bass stuff at all this Friday night. Stars 10pm.

Guji and Friends

Providing a stage for local bands, OkOk Club has four on the bill for an eclectic mix of electronica, j-rock, and skate punk. Trash Panda, leaning on Ramones and Screeching Weasel influences, open the show, which also includes X-Japan tribute act, Blue Blood, bedroom electronica act Jungle Butterfly, and new synth pop act Guji. Experimental sounds and performances in the tranquil garden paradise of Keep It Quiet. Producer and composer Baoerjin, celebrates his latest release — expect astral projection — joined on the outdoor show by Trans MiB, and a slew of experimental and improv electronic and performance artists. The beard scratcher of the weekend. 120rmb at the door. Starts 8pm.

If you've been staving for some classic turntable-ism, ALL has a great line-up for the headz with DJ Daniel Flipside 45 Mixtape Release Party. Supported by both Beijing's fRUITYSHOP and local vinyl merchants The Melting Pot, expect a full line-up of snap, crackle, and pop -- all 45s being played only. Jinsfake, Danzel, Rochaos, B.C.K., Vertigob. Starts 10pm.

Shanghai United celebrates the club's second anniversary in a big way at the new Botteca. Saturday night at 9pm, they're plunging back into the great pop culture of 2000s -- Paris Hilton and Gigi D'Agostino are on the deck, special drink menu, dancing all night long and a birthday cake for the guests at midnight. Free entrance for everybody - just don't forget to dress up in 2000s vibe - the best outfit will be rewarded. Starts 9pm. 

It's a nice night; get yourself sorted for E’s and whiz! Specters' monthly Brit Pop night is BACK with all the classic hits from the UK from the 80s, 90s, and beyond. A big bill of evil fuckin’ heavy metal to round out your weekend down at OG Yuyintang.
