A Bunch of F&Bs: Mix 320, Funkadeli, URBAN Cafe, and More

Food and bev gossip… well, we haven’t done one of these in a minute. But damn, Shanghai is heating up.

A Bunch of F&Bs: The weekly dose of what's new and hot in Shanghai's F&B scene.

New Menus, New Directions

Funkadeli will be doing renovations soon at their central location in the early part of next year to re-open with a focus on apertivo. Chef Lucky Lasagna is redesigning the menu, so it should be a definite upgrade. From some of the photos we saw… yeah, it looks good.

The Cut at IAPM is releasing a new lunch set-menu under Chef Matthew Ona (Kathleen’s, Shook!, Napa Wine Bar, etc). Most of their sets are gonna be between 78RMB – 88RMB.

Mercado 505 had to close recently do to a massive / small fire (depending on if your talking to an American or European, size differs). Thankfully "no personel were lost" in the incident. Phew! They'll be doing renovations and put on a new coat of utterly inflammable paint, and aim to re-open in 2-3 weeks.

URBAN Café at the Sukhothai is in the midst of getting a make-over both in size and menu. They’re going to open up a terrace that seats 60 people with a Thai pavilion. Probably bigger news is that they imported a Michelin recommended chef from Caledon in Bangkok. It won’t be traditional Thai cuisine, but modern Thai. The newly revamped menu will be released next week. We tried it. If you’ve got a date or boss or client or arch-enemy that you need to impress, this is stellar new menu. Two dishes you should definitely order: the Snow Fish, and the Slow Cooked Chicken Confit with the garlic-tamarind glaze. They pop!

Coming Soon to a Plate Near You

Giampolo from Porcelino has started his own venture with consultations from Chef Andrea (J Hotel, 101 Centuono). It’s not quite open yet, but word on the street is that this casual fine-dining restaurant in Jing’an will focus on home-made ingredients, with fresh pasta, in-house baked focaccia, their own homemade porcetta, freshly made jam, and on and on. They’ll also have a small in-store retail section like Alimentari does. But here everything is made-in house, so you can pick up their fresh pastas, breads, pasta sauces, sausages to take home and cook up yourself.

Oriental Springs, everyone’s favorite new water palace (seriously, it’s been an expat take-over), is developing an “immersive dining experience” on the third floor. There is also talk that they may be exploring a hotel license, to offer patrons overnight stays with a limited number of rooms that will almost certainly always be booked, so don’t even get your hopes up.

The UK’s famous Harrods Cafe is coming to Shanghai in a heritage building inside of Taikoo Hui across from the Sukhothai. They’ve been in Shanghai for awhile, but have only done private, invitation-only retail. The café will be Harrod’s first foray into letting us peasants in for a drink.

New F&B Hub of the Week

Mix 320, a new F&B hub on Wuyi Lu opened last weekend with tons of new bars, restaurants, and cafes, catering to this overlooked little area of Changning, just around the corner from Lotus Eatery.  Check back tomorrow for a deeper dive on what’s in there but for now we’ll throw these names at you: casual Spanish bar ZeRock, fusion continental resto Red Rock, and yet another location of popular cocktails hangout, Barbarian.

News for Creatures of the Night

COA HK, a Mexican themed cocktail bar FAMOUS for being on “Best Bar” lists for Asia, World, and a ton other lists, spanning back to 2018 is coming soon to Shanghai.

Dada has OPENED again at their Yan’an Lu location.  Amber has CLOSED… again… pff.  Seems that there is just too much competition these days in the late-late night scene. For now… they are keeping the space and may renovate into a different concept. Gay bar? Oxygen bar? Shisha bar? Studio Ghibli bar? An underground In N’Out burger bar?

Famous American hip hop club to the stars (Jay-Z, Beyonce, Madonna, et al.) 1 OAK is opening in Puxi this weekend in the former location of Space Plus.   Should make some waves…
