Discover the Best of Shanghai

We aren't Dianping and our goal isn't to list every single restaurant, bar and venue in town. But we do want to be the place where you can discover interesting places that are relevant to an international English-speaking audience. There are a TON of law firms in Shanghai for example, but why list the ones that don't speak English?  We have several thousand places listed with photos and editor descriptions, and curated lists to make them easily accessible. Many directory listings are sourced directly from you, our readers. And... some venues don't last long on SmartShanghai either, if for example, we receive a lot of complaints about a particular place.

Improved: The Kids & Family Directory

The best evidence that we've grown up from being a "nightlife website" was probably the launch of our Kids & Family Directory (yep, some of us became parents!). We are constantly adding new content and improving the usability,  and creating more guides to make family life in Shanghai a little bit easier. Improved: The Education Directory

We've also been running a pretty useful English language Education Directory for a couple of years and have now imported all of its contents to our app. We are making huge updates to this section, so expect to see a lot more guides and features appearing here in 2024 as we continue to expand this part. Like other parts of SmartShanghai, this section was launched after one of our founders had kids, and thought "why is it so hard to look up schools in Shanghai". Viola! We've put a lot of work into this section, because we know how BIG a decision finding a school can be for a family. We hope it's helpful Shanghai!

Pro-Tip: We'd recommend signing up for "push-notifications" for our APP. We use the function sparingly, and only for really news worthy content, or for urgent policy notifications (most will tell you, that our push notifications were extremely helpful in keeping everyone up to date during Shanghai's lockdown).
