Patio Porn 2021: The New Stuff

The complete guide to eating and drinking outside in Shanghai... "part 1", of course.

  • Chez Jojo (Fumin Lu)

    Chez Jojo (Fumin Lu)

A French-style wine bar, with a large selection of wines by glass and by bottle, starting at a very reasonable 42rmb per glass. It's hidden from the street (you might have to call to get in through the keycoded door), with plenty of nice garden seating. Secluded, peaceful, good for dates, small gatherings, or just a nice glass of wine in a low-key environment.

    Colca (North Bund)

The second location of the original Colca on Hengshan Lu, this is Eduardo Vargas cooking the food of his heritage: Peruvian. Expect busy, busy fusion cuisine, executed with a lot of style and personality. Located at Sinar Mas Plaza, a mall opposite the W Shanghai hotel, they’ve got a large outdoor seating area, replete with bar to douse yourself in with Pisco-based cocktails.

  • Le Jardin

    Le Jardin

This fine dining French restaurant opened with some controversy in 2021. Le Jardin JR say they are legally entitled to operate under the name of Joël Robuchon, the late, great French chef and restaurateur. The group that operates L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon and other Robuchon venues around town says they aren’t. Either way the stunning mansion, once home to legendary painter Zhang Daqian isn't a bad place to enjoy a 1,588rmb degustation menu. The outdoor seating is bisected a by pool which you are meant to richly appreciate but probably not cannonball into.

  • BoboLEE

    BoboLEE

Moroccan-styled roof garden sitting atop BoboLEE Cake, which serves basic Western dishes (steaks, Eggs Benedict, "English Breakfast") and alcoholic drinks. Outdoor seating is super competitive, so going early on a weekday nets you a better chance of dining with a view in the sunshine. To give you an idea of the popularity, professional cameras are banned on the terrace…

  • Studio Insight

    Studio Insight

Studio Insight is a foreign-invested music center that offers both one-on-one and group classes for instruction in vocal, piano, guitar, and every other instrument you can think of (more on that here). In addition to extensive pedagogic and recording facilities they’ve got three spacious rooftop balconies, variously used for events, BBQs, and jams featuring local musicians playing acoustic. (Neighbors.) When one of your co-workers invites you to see their band play on a rooftop in Jing’an, this is where you’re going.

  • Terrace 8 (Portman Ritz-Carlton)

    Terrace 8 (Portman Ritz-Carlton)

The eighth floor terrace of the Portman Ritz-Carlton is a lush hemisphere of green grass, ideal for — your favorite thing, my favorite thing — champagne picnics in the evening summer breeze. They do a bunch of food and drink deals, including free-flow Moet for 668rmb per person, but you can also just order a la carte the way you might down in the lobby bar. Great south-facing and unobstructed view of the Shanghai Exhibition Center. Open Thursday to Sunday only. Call ahead to reserve.

  • Bloom

    Bloom

Located at the top end of the street and hidden from passersby, Bloom is a high-end, tapas-style bistro nestled away in a leafy complex in South Jing’an on Tongren Lu. Offering a lot of greenery, ambiance, and space, it’s not a bad spot for a date if you've got a little cash to burn. “Dating on Tongren” used to mean so much else…

  • PoZ

    PoZ

This new French bistro has taken over part of the villa and garden that houses Thai restaurant Coconut Paradise, adding new flavors to this long-running, tourist favorite al fresco spot. The lush garden is shared, as is the villa, but PoZ have added their own small outbuilding to the mix. They’ve got their own bar and kitchen that turns out French classics and doubles as a boulangerie.

  • Eat 'n' Work

    Eat 'n' Work

Something out in Pudong. After renovating their food court, the Super Brand Mall now hosts a dinning space on 9th floor, offering a good selection of meal sets, American pub food, and popular East Asian dishes. They also sell alcohol. Which you need because you are in Pudong. On the 10th floor is a co-working space with around 50 seats, overlooking the Huangpu River and the Bund skyline. • Bandit (Julu Lu)

    Bandit (Julu Lu)

The second Bandit following their original Jing’an location, this Bandit has two lovely terraces in their five levels of bushy, zany, funky restaurant-plus-bar-plus-everything action. Bandit is all things to all people. Brunch, cocktails, cafe, DJs, restaurant, “creative events space” — but for our purposes here, it is specifically two lovely terraces at this location. The top floor is only open at the weekends and usually needs reservation.

  • Lenbach (Fumin Lu)

    Lenbach (Fumin Lu)

This is the German chain that has taken over the space that used to be World of Beer, and is serving slightly higher-end German food off that heavily trafficked bit of Fumin Lu. Of note: butter-dry-aged steaks that they cure for 30 days before serving. To accompany, there’s also a fridge full of mostly European wines, with a few bottles of New Zealand naturals in there too. Lenbach’s big, with seats for nearly 160 at both booths and tables. TV’s showing sport hang on a central pillar and there’s ample terrace seating overlooking Fumin Lu, one of the central arteries of our busy city.

  • Vesta (Blackstone Apartments)

    Vesta (Blackstone Apartments)

Located opposite the SSO, Vesta is boutique hotel M+'s ground floor restaurant, built to resemble a greenhouse and absolutely bathed in shimmering, shimmering sunlight on clear days. So, it’s not a patio, technically, but it’s feels fresh and open. It’s the second of its kind after the success of the original at Jing’an Kerry Center. The menu is western and Asian, all small bites, with their "thing" being a beer-can chicken brined in beer and roasted vertically, sitting on the can, sort of. Hey, it’s a thing.

  • Barbarian

    Barbarian

Cozy, rustic-looking bar with an emphasis on crafted, custom-order cocktails. This is a super popular one in that expat-heavy nexus of streets in Jing’an anchored around Yanping Lu. Barbarian’s a ground-up success story built through good cocktails and bites, attentive service, and a unique atmosphere. Their upstairs terrace is buzzing during warmer months.

A restaurant serving both French and Vietnamese cuisine, with an explicitly exotic, antique-looking decor. • Cé La Vi

    Cé La Vi

It’s been a rocky go of it for the three-in-one nightlife hub on the Bund, after shuttering and opening again this year. But, hey, that terrace is real nice and real Bund-y. Here is a picture of it. Food is modern Asian fusion and dinners are meant to cascade into after-dinner parties.
