Euro Cup fever! Contract it! Here’s what you already know: Co-hosted by Poland and the Ukraine, the Euro Cup 2012 runs from June 8 to July 1, with matches airing at 12am and 2:30am, Shanghai time. It kicks into high gear from June 21 onwards, with quarter final matches at 2:30am. The final is scheduled at that time on Sunday, July 1. Note that all the matches take place here in the early hours of the following morning, so when we say June 8, we mean the early hours of June 9, and so on. First game is this Friday night at midnight: Poland vs. Greece. Click here for the official UEFA schedule online and click here for an excel download of it, time adjusted by the good folks at excely.com. If you’re looking for a physical copy, close your eyes and wait five minutes, and some marketing guy from Heineken will be along to pop one into your hands and dry hump your leg in due course. *Swish* SmartShanghai compiled a quick run-down of Shanghai pubs and bars hosting screenings of the European Cup. Here’s who’s got the games, the TV situation, the lay of the land, and the price of entry. Quick note: Sports bars charging admission? Yeah, get used to that for the duration of the event. Most are tossing you a few beers for your troubles and it’s their way of discouraging people who roll up and camp out, bringing in their own ice tea from the Kedi. Just FYI, The Bulldog, erstwhile one of Shanghai’s longest-running sports bars, shuttered its doors about a month ago, if you didn’t notice. Erase it from your memory; Dog is dead. ***
The Camel
Admission:At the Puxi location it's 100rmb to get in the door. This pays for your first three drinks, and you can order anything you want as long as its Tuborg beer. The Pudong branch isn't quite so established, though, so, at the time of writing, admission there will be free. They're still toying with the notion of charging for the final match. We recommend calling ahead to avoid disappointment. TV Situation: Camel's Puxi branch boasts 18 screens, two of them large. Pudong offers 19 TVs and a massive drop-down screen for a projector as well. All of it is in HD, so every time a player for Team Italy dives, you can see his feigned grimaces of pain in full detail. Drinks: After those three Tuborgs, it's business as usual behind the bar: draft pints ranging from 40-65rmb, bottled beers 35-70rmb, cocktails around 50rmb. Food: The Camel's menu of Aussie-inspired pub grub like meat pies and fish and chips is available until midnight. After that they'll be offering a pared down menu of snacks like thick-cut fries, wings, nachos, potato wedges, calamari, and pizza. Atmosphere: Camel is one of Shanghai's go-to venues for televised sports. Expect big crowds of rabid fans, that will only get bigger as the tournament progresses.
O’Malley’s
Admission: 100rmb entry for all matches. That includes one standard drink, maybe two, they haven’t decided yet.
TV Situation: The venue has 30 screens, including four giant ones -- “the biggest in Shanghai” they assure us. Screens will be inside the venue, on the grassy patch outside, and on the terrace.
Drinks: No drink specials planned. Standard prices (beers from around 45rmb) apply. Update: O'M's has finalized their drinks promotions. Here's the deets: "100rmb general entry incl. 1L of Carlsberg; 200rmb for the Grandstand with 2L Carlsberg; 350rmb for the VIP area upstairs, incl. free flow drinks and snacks." Have at it.
Food: Bar snacks menu plus a food stand outside selling hot dogs (30rmb), pizzas (60rmb, or 10rmb a slice) and pies (beef or chicken, 50rmb).
Atmosphere: Another no-brainer, O’Malley’s has ample space, including two large outdoor areas, and enough staff and experience to screen big sports events without the risk of the satellite feed dropping out just as things go to penalties. They’re setting up a Grandstand and a VIP area with room for about 80 people to sit in comfort. They’re expecting more than 1000 people for the big games, so expect things to get noisy. Chanting, whistles, giant inflatable hands. Wigs… probably some novelty wigs. O’Malley’s is also the default sports bar for the continental Euros that usually hit the clubs, so depending on who’s playing, expect an international crowd.
Boxing Cat
Admission:Admission is free during group play, but once the quarter finals start, they'll be charging 100rmb at the door. That entitles you to three drinks, which, if you do the math, is actually a slightly better deal than their happy hour prices. TV Situation: Both branches will have televisions on each floor. At the Yongfu branch they'll have nine screens total -- four projectors, five televisions. The slightly larger Sinan Mansions branch has a total of 12 -- three projectors, nine televisions. Drinks: They'll be instituting their standard happy hour prices: 35rmb for house pours and pints of hand-crafted beer. Food: They'll be serving a scaled-back menu of standard sports bar fare: wings, sliders, nachos, etc. The management tells us that it will all will be discounted. Exact prices are to be determined. Atmosphere: The Cat typically draws a boisterous, beer-loving North American crowd. However, seeing as how most of them couldn't care less about soccer, they'll likely clear out come midnight and hand the place over to the Europeans. Add to the mix brew master Michael Jordan's high-gravity beers and deep-seated nationalist sentiments and it stands to get pretty lively here.
Big Bamboo
Admission:All three locations of Big Bamboo will be in Euro Cup mode for the duration of the tournament with a 100rmb cover charge applying to selected matches and the final stages. That cover comes with 2 free beers. TV Situation: In addition to their already ample on-site TVs tuned to the games, they’re having at least one big screen per venue. Drinks: Drinks are standards with an outside Carlsberg bar at the Hongmei branch and specials on Heineken at all three locations. Expect gifts, give-aways and prizes throughout the tournament. Food: Their full kitchen menu is available until 2am and then for late night matches, they're offering a late night menu with a selection of appetizers, all their burgers, hot dogs and pizzas for the duration. Atmosphere: Big Bamboo is home base for a lot of Shanghai expat sports teams, and they’re offering free entrance to league players for the whole Euro Cup tournament. As one of Shanghai longest running sports bars, it’s always an eclectic cast of hard Shanghai lifers for the big sports tourneys. Expect a big and boisterous crowd of regulars, in particular at that Nanyang Lu branch, which is a great place to stumble out of drunk at 7am. Watch out for scooter drivers barreling down Nanyang on their way to work.
The Shed
Free for the entire tournament. TV Situation: Five 52-inch LCD screens. It seems like a small number, but it's a small space. It's enough. Drinks: The Shed's not offering any special deals, but that's only because their regular prices are already reasonable enough. Bottles of Pure Blonde, stubbies of VB and Tsingtao and drafts of Carlsberg, for instance, all go for 25rmb. Oh, and if they still have it in stock, be sure grab a bottle of Brooklyn Brewery's seasonal summer ale for 35rmb. The harder stuff hovers in this region too. Food: The kitchen is closed during the matches. Sorry, folks. Atmosphere: The Shed is a quintessential neighborhood pub catering to a crowd that tends to be a little more mature, a little more laid back. Come tourney time, you can expect more or less the same, only more densely populated.
Malone's
Admission:All matches have a door price of 100rmb, which includes a free drink. TV Situation: Malone’s has five TVs on the first floor and a further eight on the second plus two big projectors on each floor. They say the matches should be visible everywhere. Drinks: Drink prices will be the usual (from 45rmb and up for standard stuff). They’re not doing any drink promotions, except possibly one of their regular deals, such as if you buy six beers together they’ll throw another in free. But that wasn’t guaranteed, so ask on the night. Food: Food is the usual stuff -- burgers (80-90rmb), sandwiches (65-76rmb) and pasta (around 60rmb), plus a few Asian dishes. For the late matches, the kitchen will probably be closed. Atmosphere: Malone’s is most popular with Americans, who presumably won’t care about any of this, but you can still assume it’s going to be very busy during matches -- it’s still the default sports bar option for many foreigners here. No crazy innovations are planned for the UEFA Championship, but if you just care about the games and don’t mind paying to get in, they will be open throughout the contest, showing every game. They are also thinking about arranging a VIP area, which would buy you some more space and a guaranteed seat in exchanged for a higher door price or a minimum spend. It might be something they set up as the competition heats up and moves into the final rounds.
Mr & Mrs Bund
Admission:It’s free to get in to all the matches. TV Situation: They’ve set up two big screens: a 1.8m x 1.2m one on top of the Enomatic wine machine and a 3.5m x 3m screen at the front of the venue by the window overlooking the Bund. Drinks: They’ll have a two-for-one deal on beer for every match. The beer will change according to who’s playing. So two-for-one French beer when the French play, German beer when the Germans play, and so on. Normal prices for everything else -- house wine and beer both 55rmb. Any games with more than six goals and it’s free shots for everyone. Food: Late night eats are kind of their thing. Food? Yeah, bring some cash. Atmosphere: It’s already a late-night haunt for Shanghai’s Euro droves, but Mr & Mrs B is going large on the UEFA Championship and screening almost every game. Expect big crowds, especially during the French games. If France makes it to the final, this will be the place to go. They’re showing all matches during the group stage except those on a Sunday night (Monday early hours) and Monday night (Tuesday early hours). Then they’re showing all the quarter finals, semis and the final. They’ll have a standing area by the big screens, plus tables as usual serving food. For table bookings, call 6323 9898.
