The Big List: Thanksgiving '14

Where you can cram all the turkey, green beans, potatoes and pie into your face in Shanghai. Our picks for the year 2014. You're welcome.

Once again, Shanghai's American population celebrates excess, football, puritanism and Anglo-native American relations for Thanksgiving. These are our selections of where to eat, drink, be merry, and maybe get into a drunken argument with that uncle of yours whose worldview is formed exclusively by right-wing talk radio.

Newcomers

I get the meat sweats just reading about Liquid Laundry's Thankgiving debut. They're going over the top with braised and truffled short ribs, hairy crab mac and cheese, duck, foie, pear almond tarts with brown butter, oh, and turkey too. That's all 600rmb, and the price gets you two adult beverages and unlimited soft drinks. No free-flow booze at this one. For that, you'll need to hit up Liquid Laundry's sister restaurant Boxing Cat, you lush. Husk is serving a sharing menu, featuring starters like martini prawns and turkey croquettes. For mains, you can go Aussie Wagyu beef or roast turkey with baby carrots, Brussels sprouts, Yorkshire pudding (who eats Yorkshire pudding for thanksgiving), stuffing and cranberry sauce. For dessert it's Husk signatures, like their fig and burnt butter tart or their pear and ginger cake. That's 368rmb per person, and if you book your table before November 25 and you'll get a complimentary welcome cocktail. Chef Rafael Qing of Light & Salt is doing a modish four-course dinner for 498rmb, featuring a lobster and pear cocktail, orange-pumpkin soup, traditional roasted turkey with the trimmings, and a choice of pumpkin pie or chocolate mousse for dessert. If you're party is six or more and you have the foresight to book four days ahead, they'll even present a turkey at your table.

Tried and True

Madison

is always a solid option for Thanksgiving, even if you can't get into the restaurant's epic annual industry-only after hours dinner. For you civilians out there, however, Chef Austin Hu has two options. On Thanksgiving night, it's a five-course tasting menu with all kinds of gourmet goodies, like turducken, butter braised turkey breast, ricotta raviolo and more. That's 498rmb per person. For something a little more casual, there is his Sunday night family-style dinner, too. That's 300rmb per person and gets you unlimited helpings of turkey with giblet gravy, string bean salad, mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts and other Turkey day staples. Maya is inviting people binge for a good cause. The Mexican restaurant is hosting a dinner to benefit Xin Xing Aid for Street Children, a Chinese run NGO that provides support for homeless and disadvantaged youth in Shanxi Province. Dinner is 450rmb per person, and this gets you unlimited drinks and a turkey dinner. In addition to that, they'll have a silent auction and other holiday items on sale, and all funds raised will go to Xin Xing, so they can continue their important work. Learn more here. Classic steakhouse Roosevelt Prime will be serving a five-course dinner for 599rmb. You get a pumpkin soup with wild mushrooms, a Thanksgiving-themed chopped salad with cranberries and apples, and a petit filet to warm you up for the turkey main course. It comes with mash potatoes, gravy, green beans, and stuffing. Then they finish it off with apple pie. To drink, they've got a special price on Bradford Mountain zinfandel, a big, jammy grape varietal that matches Thanksgiving dinner perfectly. Nougatine, the more affordable younger sibling of Jean Georges, is serving a four-course dinner featuring signatures like their kingfish sashimi, black cod, foie gras-stuffed free-range turkey and more. More Affordable

Aussie eatery Kakadu is turning Thanksgiving into a four-day weekend, with nightly all-you-can-eat buffets every evening from Thursday to Sunday. For only 148rmb you get all the turkey, gravy, cranberry sauce, roasted pork, mac and cheese, baked barramundi (a concession to any Aussies who might be dining there) and more. One more Three on the Bund recomendation. New Heights is doing a surprisingly affordable four-course dinner of dishes like foie gras au torchon, slow-cooked turkey breast, and walnut pie for only 268rmb+10%. Not a bad price, considering the neighborhood and the view. Reserve a table soon if you want to secure a table by the window.

Turkeys to Go

If you're looking to dine at home, many of the above venues have takeaway turkey deals available, too. Madison is selling 6-kilo citrus and herb-brined and roasted turkeys for 1118rmb, 1788rmb for a turkey with a set of six side dishes. Learn more about that here. The JW Marriott is roasting take-home turkey dinners for 1588rmb from now until the end of the year. Out in Jinqiao, Casalingo in the Marriott Pudong East is selling 5-kilo turkeys for 888rmb+15%. Kathleen's Waitan is selling 5.5-kilo roasted birds between now and Thanksgiving.
