el Coctel is closed, but there are still several nice cocktail bars left in the Xuhui area, and one of them, Union Trading Co., the dark little bar that takes over two floors on Fenyang Lu, just started up a happy hour that's done right.

It's straightforward. It's simple. Here's...

The Deal: 50rmb gets you anything on the happy hour menu -- a selection of six cocktails and four dishes -- running from 6pm to 8pm, Sunday to Thursday. Details inside.

On a recent Thursday night, the bar had just a few patrons talking quietly and partaking in the aforementioned happy hour. Drinks on the menu include the standard popular mainstays -- the martini, negroni, old fashioned, and margarita. You aren't going to get any of mixologist and part owner Yao Lu's signature cocktails but these choices do the job as well. They're using spirits like Beefeater, Benchmark No. 8, High West Double Rye, and Bacardi Carta Blanca.

The caption below the pulled pork sandwich reads, "Tossed in mustard barbecue sauce then layered with three cheeses on some fine buttered bread, porky and cheesy, much like my appeal to the fairer sex." -- presumably written by Austin Hu of Madison, and a partner at Union, who designed the food on the menu. The sandwich certainly appealed just fine.

The Sichuan spiced chicken was also good; it came well-seasoned and plentiful. And although comfort food isn't usually what you want with a cocktail, somehow it all works during Union's Happy Hour.

I'm happy to see Union offering a happy hour that lets customers enjoy the place without having to pay for drinks that cost 80rmb to 90rmb. Hopefully more cocktail bars follow suit. (I'm looking at you Botanist.)

August 3: This article was updated with info about the kinds of spirits used.
