The Greenwich Village institution has announced via WeChat that Blue Note Jazz Club Shanghai will be opening in spring 2019. Plans for a Shanghai spot have been floating around since 2015 but this is the first time they've set a date. The Beijing Blue Note Jazz Club, which celebrated its two-year anniversary a couple of weeks ago, was originally set to open in March 2016, so let's say Shanghai'll be "spring" 2019. It's the latest addition to the Blue Note empire, which now has venues in Japan, Italy, the US and Slovakia (wait what). Expect two performances a night, Tuesday through Sunday. Big names that have played at Blue Note Beijing in the past include Robert Glasper, Kenny Garrett and Beijing's own Liu Yuan. Wonder if they'll invite the JZ band to play. No location yet. Shanghai: still a good place to like jazz.
