It's been a year of loss for Shanghai venues. Already we've mourned cultural pillars like The Geisha, 88 Bar, Shiva Lounge, 696 Live House, Slices and now…Glamour Bar. After ten years in the game, the Bund 5 location suddenly closed its doors last Saturday, though proprietor Michelle Garnaut is keeping her restaurant M on the Bund and The Crystal Room bar there. The reason?

Rising costs… The closure came as a surprise, as Michelle made the announcement on Friday and the venue held its last party on Saturday.

Who better to ask for a eulogy on a departed Shanghai venue than a DJ Dave Van Buuren, who DJed at the club twice before getting fired. He described it thusly: "Glamour Bar -- it's a wonderful, wonderful place. Perhaps its legacy will be that it truly provided a contemporary re-visioning of Shanghai's bygone 1920s heritage: it was where rich-ass white people went to drink and talk about books. In all honesty, though, it was a lovely place and it will be missed."

As for March's Literary Festival, it looks like that's still going down. We just spoke with someone at AsiaMedia, who works on the event, and they said the event will happen as planned in The Crystal Room. More info as we get it.
