Hearing mixed reviews about the rest of Strawberry Festival, but Monday night was a huge bummer for many, as UK rave act The Prodigy got stuck on the airport runaway from Beijing to Shanghai and never played their headline slot. Festival organizers waited until around 6.30pm to make the announcement, and by 7pm, streams of disappointed fans were flowing out of Expo Park
With no replacement act, the main stage closed early with the last scheduled bands playing out their sets to the remaining fans. Dongbei glam rockers Second Hand Rose were the last band to perform on the main stage; metal band 战斧 (Tomahawk) brought the rage on the "Love Stage"; Plastic Chocolate dropped some soft rock jams in the rain; and the electronic stage delivered some straight-up, over-the-top EDM "get your hands up" stuff indicative of the direction the promotions company as a whole is moving in these days, via a few resident DJs of Beijing's mainstream EDM clubs. (Maybe the right move would have been playing some Prodigy tracks but no -- these DJs are nihilists.) Then security kicked everyone out promptly at 9.10pm.
An anticlimactic end to a weekend if there ever was one.
