Sad news in the Shanghai food scene
The Copenhagen Times reports that
Napa Wine Bar & Kitchen Chef Martin Bentzen, was found dead in his apartment last week from a heart attack, which
Copenhagen Times attributes to stress. He was only 32 years old.
Bentzen came to Shanghai with some impressive pedigree, having worked underneath famed chef René Redzepi of Noma as sous chef and executive chef in charge of banquets. Redzepi posted on his
Facebook page:
"Our former Souschef @martinstenbentzen died suddenly yesterday - rest in piece old friend. You will be missed tremendously! Thank you for everything that you've done for us. Thank you for being such a friend and leader. May your last journey be a good one.
Best wishes from all your friends at noma."
A formal statement from
Napa Wine Bar and Kitchen management, we are told, is forthcoming.
In the meantime, we extend our deepest condolences to Bentzen's family, and the Napa team in this difficult time.
UPDATE: Napa Wine Bar & Kitchen proprietor Philippe Huser has issued an official statement regarding Bentzen's death. Here it is in full:
