"The waitress brought out a little takeout box of water for my dog..." & The 500rmb Sherpa's Winner

May 9, 2016 | 18:58 Mon
Every Monday (ish) we give away 500rmb in Sherpa's delivery to whoever wrote our favorite restaurant review during the previous week. Last week Monday was a holiday so we've got some catching up to do. Let's get into it.

***

"I genuinely missed Favorita when they were transitioning to the new location. Unlike the numerous whisky bars or cocktail lounges, there aren't many places that serve as a substitute for this place. It's a pity the new location is a bit further out but I'll still be making the trip over whenever I get the chance." - Woaizhongguo on Favorita

***

"Without doubt a welcome addition to the Xintiandi area." - Woaizhongguo on Hunter Gatherer (Hubin Dao)

***

"The salmon sashimi for 68 RMB consisted of just 5 slices of salmon but they were huge chunky slices. The bowl of avocado salad for 58 RMB almost occupied the entire table." - Woaizhongguo on Agora

***

"It's like the slightly more dowdy cousin of Taoyuan Village which shares almost an identical menu list but prices here are significantly cheaper. If you're around the area this is definitely worth a try." - Woaizhongguo on A'Wen

[Ed's Note: Yes, yes, yes. 1000x yes on A'wen, the realest 24 hour breakfast joint in Shanghai.]

Of course, the obligatory review of Tepito…

"As for service, the waitress brought out a little takeout box of water for my dog. Gold star for initiative, which in China, is non-existent. - sun.chen on Tepito

***

"The beer was wickedly delicious which I pounded in no time, giving me a nice buzz and a great feeling after I left. Worth checking out or becoming a regular at." - FLXmmc on Pint House

***

"So for a venue that brings in some of the top electronic acts coming through Shanghai, they should really figure out their sound. The heating ducts rattle on the walls making it sound like your in the back of a trunk with poorly installed 10 inch subs. Rattle Rattle Rattle. Other than that. Decent club that makes you feel like your in the warehouse where the Ninja Turtles enemies hangout." -- Mark86 on Arkham

***

"Coming from London I'm a little bit cautious about riverside restaurants, as I've experienced a few places there who put the view before the food and service, and expect their customers (and their wallets) to be cool with that. I've now been to el Willy on at least four separate occasions in the last year, in a variety of situations - date night, work dinner, treating friends visiting from the UK - and feel I can say without any trace of doubt that el Willy firmly does not fall into this camp." -- NaomiB on el Willy

***

"Hi, welcome to Gubei. I'm part of the group that was obscenely drunk on Sunday at your venue." - handoogies on Dr. Wine (Gubei)

***

"Xingfu lu is certainly on the up with its new lane way of dinning and watering hole options. Pie society appears to be the only reasonable (relative to it neighbors) option from my hasty assessment. - Cathartic on Pie Society

***

"Good place for foreigners , especially the music, they got variety, good atmosphere, alot of foreigners , i had fun there" - Kitty11 on Maia's

[Ed's Note: Yeah… kinda reads like a plant. BUT, your correspondents visited this place a few weeks ago, and it's good times and cheap thrills. Fans of Perry's and low-rent adventure will approve. It's like, "Perry's: The Mystery of Tarot Cards." 100rmb for 3 liters of Asahi.]

And the winner is… Woaizhongguo! Solid choices AND an A'Wen drop? Clearly the winner. Congrats.

Remember -- we do this every week. If you ate or drank somewhere, tell us about it.
