Weekend In Comedy: Festival Finals, Dashan, Improv, and Chinese SNL?

Apr 1, 2016 | 14:40 Fri
This is a big comedy weekend -- maybe Shanghai's biggest -- largely due to Kung Fu Komedy Club's (KFK) International China Comedy Festival. Tonight is the final rounds of the Chinese-language competition, with two shows happening at 7pm and 9pm. Some big names participating in this one, including some comedians who are rumored to be working on an official Chinese version of Saturday Night Live.

Saturday is the English-language contest's final round. Then on Sunday, Canadian Mandarin master Dashan -- who's also a judge in the contests, and who SmSh's Morgan S. did a long interview with at a Wagas in Beijing -- performs stand-up at 8pm.

More comedy news after the jump.

The Shanghai Comedy Club has moved to Sasha's temporarily while Masse finds a new location. HK-based comic Pete Grella (who's in town for KFK's contest) performs in their showcase tonight. You can catch some of his material here. Supporting the act are a bunch of Shanghai-based, SCC regulars. That starts at 8.30pm.

Two improv shows happen on Sunday at gay bar Happiness 42. The Ministry of Laughter, who just graduated Zmack's Improv 101 course, performs at 6pm, then Zmack performs at 8.30pm, along with Grella -- seems like the guy is hitting every comedy show in town. (Must be above all that comedic comedy group tension.)

Happening later this month, KFK brings in their first female international headliner, Zainab Johnson on April 15 and 16. Competing on the same dates, The Pearl enters the stand-up game with Joe Machi. Both Johnson and Machi were contestants on NBC's 2014 season of Last Comic Standing. Looks like they're doing sort of an awkward high school reunion in Shanghai.
