Now Open: Moules
By Justin Fischer, Dec 15th, 2010 | In Dining
This French restaurant opened about two weeks ago just east of Xintiandi on Taicang Lu. It isn’t exciting enough to produce a blip on our Radar screen. Still, Moules is worth a little mention. But for one reason and one reason only: It’s namesake, mussels.
These guys ship them in live and steam them to order. They bring them to your table plump and piping hot in brightly colored pots. On my last visit, they were still serving their soft opening menu, which features six or seven different styles. There are standards like mussels mariniere or mussels with roquefort, they steam some with curry, too. True to French/Belgian form, they serve them with a basket of fries. And they cater to sensibilities on both sides of the pond by providing ketchup and mayonnaise. Not only that, prices are surprisingly reasonable for this area. Mussel pots start at 72rmb and top out around 90. And for the quality, I think that's a steal. They also offer a menu of very traditional-sounding, meat and potato-ey mains for around 150rmb. But, if a restaurant names itself "mussels" in French, are you really going there to try those?
