Christmas Markets: This Weekend and More

By Dec 6, 2012 Community
Christmas is kicking in and we have a bunch of markets and gatherings for gift ideas, festive food and the like. Starting tomorrow and running all weekend, Paulaner Brauhaus on Fenyang Lu has this Christkindlmarkt, with vendors selling wreathes, trees, Christmas gifts and ornaments, as well as stalls serving Christmas Gluehwein and other German festive specialties. You have to pay to get in: 25rmb per person. That runs Friday, 4-10pm, Saturday, 11am-10pm. and Sunday, 11am-7pm.

This Saturday and Sunday, there's this Christmas flea market at the Oasis offices in Xintiandi. Stores including The Hat Lab, Cyrielle M., Shokay, Oba, Absoluter Boutique, Mi Casa, TheOrangeBlowfish, La Rose de Shanghai, Gustave bijoux and Eco Bibi will be selling their designs, plus there will be food from Scioko, Mr V, Lollipop Bakery, De Bellotas, Fat Mama and more. Gift ideas up the wazoo. Free to get in and that runs 11am-6pm. Don't fear the cold, either, there will be heaters all over the market to keep guests warm. Map and details here.

Also this Saturday, it's the regular Yanping Lu market organized by

Amelia Heaton-Renshaw, her of sausages, carts and jams. This goes on every second and fourth of the month in the open space next door to the Gold Cider Clubhouse, but this one is Christmas themed, so expect mince pies, spicy wine, yule logs, baked goods in the shape of Jesus. Who knows... Free to get in and that runs 11am-5pm. More here. And there's another one of those on December 22.

Looking ahead, Xintiandi is organizing a lavish Christmas market which will run daily from December 20 to January 1. This one's more of a family activity sort of thing, with gift ideas plus Christmas shows, Santa-knee-sitting action and probably some Chinese girls dressed up as elves. Fingers crossed. Entry prices vary depending on the day and time you visit: normal days it's 20rmb (10am-5pm), or 40rmb (5-10pm) but on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve it's 120rmb so they must be planning some hot stuff. More on that here.
